Job Description:


The School of Liberal Arts is looking for a dynamic, experienced, student-centered educator to join the English faculty in January 2022. Dean College invites applications for the position of First-Year Writing Coordinator, a full-time, Assistant/Associate Professor position.



The First-Year Writing Coordinator will provide vision and leadership for all initiatives related to the Dean students first-year writing experience. The Coordinator will be responsible for developing curriculum grounded in best practices, assessing the results of program initiatives, and scheduling courses. The Coordinator will also provide leadership for all sections of the first-year writing sequence including hiring adjunct faculty, assigning sections to faculty, and working effectively with constituencies across the college. Effective working relationships with the Program Coordinator of Oral Communication and the Director of the Theodore and Cynthia Berenson Center for Writing, Mathematics, and Presentation Excellence and the Director of the Writing Center are essential. Effective coordination with the Rooney-Shaw Center for Innovative Teaching, advising staff, and program coordinators is also essential. The Coordinator will lead discussions and workshops with the faculty to develop, revise, and assess learning outcomes of the first-year writing courses consistent with the Dean Career Advantage and the Dean College Student Learning Goals of the College. The candidate should have experience teaching students from a wide array of writing backgrounds, focus on experiential learning, and employ active engagement in their classroom. Expertise in areas of Postcolonial Literature, African Diaspora Studies, World Literature and/or Intersectionality is a plus.

Position details:



  • Teach 4:4 teaching load;
  • There is no faculty advising load. Students are served by a professional advising staff;
  • Develop curriculum grounded in best practices and assess the results of program initiatives;
  • Schedule first-year writing course and hire adjunct faculty;
  • Hold office hours as required and meet with students by appointment;
  • Coach and mentor students regarding academic and career goals including graduate school preparation;
  • Participate in committees as assigned, attend school and program meetings;
  • Participate in recruitment activities and student orientations;
  • Other duties as assigned.



Requirements:


  1. A Master's degree in English or related discipline is required;
  2. A PhD in English is desired with a preferred emphasis in writing and expertise in the areas of Postcolonial Literature, African Diaspora Studies, World Literature and/or Intersectionality; candidates with an ABD will be considered;
  3. Undergraduate teaching experience is required, particularly with first-year undergraduates;
  4. Proven use of best practices in first-year writing instruction;
  5. Demonstrated experience with program development, management, and assessment;
  6. Demonstrated experience in curriculum development and innovative classroom pedagogy;
  7. Demonstrated success teaching a diverse population of undergraduates at varying stages of academic readiness;
  8. Experience with course management systems (i.e. Canvas), digital technology, Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Teams, Word, PowerPoint) and classroom media such as smart boards is desired;
  9. COVID-19 Vaccination, required.
