Position Summary:

Involves providing news and information for the general public and key audiences through a clear understanding of news, skilled work with the media, programs for public outreach, and / or strategic communication of the institution's messages. Serves as acting Public Information Officer for the medical center when necessary, representing the organization as a spokesperson, serving as a communications adviser, and providing key communications assistance during a crisis/emergency.

Salary Range:

Annual Rate Minimum $80,600.00 Midpoint $121,700.00 Maximum $162,800.00

Designs, develops and implements programs to enhance an appreciation for and understanding of UCI Health to its various internal and external constituencies. Anticipates potential areas of interest or concern and develops communications strategies and tactics to prepare UCI Health to successfully and effectively address these areas to the media and various public audiences. Maximizes opportunities in all channels and platforms, including earned & owned traditional and social media, to promote discovery, innovation and clinical excellence of UCI Health staff, faculty and services. 60%

Media Com Spec 4: Exercises high degree of news judgement in conceiving, developing, and maintaining interesting narrative lines and stories that enhance the public and other important stakeholders' understanding and appreciation of UCI Health. Determines through fact checking and other techniques, the veracity and relevance of information provided by sources for owned & earned media. Develops and maintains good working relationships with both existing and potential sources and internal / external constituencies, including the media. Cultivates positive relationships with journalists/writers to assure optimal visibility for the location and its programs, including placing or "pitching" stories of interest to the media. 20%

Media Com Spec 4: Ensures that proactive media placements are consistent with strategic messaging goals. Provides advice and consultation as requested / required on appropriate methods for dealing with the media. May be called upon to serve as location spokesperson during emergencies or in times of crises. Maintains strict confidentiality. 20%

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Public Relations, English, Journalism or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum 3-5 years experience in journalism or corporate/non-profit communications
  • Strong organizational skills and self motivation and initiative to accept responsibility, work independently, prioritize workload effectively, meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks simultaneously while following through individual tasks to completion
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the Health System
  • Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload
  • Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills (ideally for newspaper) with demonstrated success writing clear, engaging, accurate and well-structured news stories/releases for a general audience
  • Success proactively identifying a steady flow of newsworthy stories and placing in the press; success building the necessary relationships with experts to keep at the forefront of assigned area; steady success placing experts and pitching stories in the media
  • Familiarity or proficiency with social media tools, including Facebook, Twitter and You Tube
  • Demonstrates excellent organizational abilities, mature interpersonal relationships, as well as strong oral and written communication skills
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of photography and video production
  • Familiarity or proficiency with publishing and web production software
  • Experience in Academic Health setting
  • Working knowledge of Hospital Incident Command System / Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
  • Centers for Domestic Preparedness Healthcare Leadership Certification
  • Knowledge of HIPAA regulations as they pertain to patient information, marketing and development
  • Ability to deal with confidential and sensitive information with discretion & good judgment
  • Knowledge of University and medical center organizations, policies, procedures and forms
