Departmental Overview

The Career Center aims to prepare undergraduates, graduate students, and alumni to make informed decisions about their futures by providing comprehensive resources, programs, and counseling on career development, internships, employment, and graduate school. The Employer Relations team focuses on facilitating meaningful career connections between students, alumni, and employers.

The Assistant Director for Experiential Learning will identify and cultivate summer internship opportunities for students as part of the Employer Relations unit of the Career Center. The incumbent will engage with employers, parents, campus staff, and alumni through a variety of programs and initiatives to generate internship and other experiential learning opportunities for students.

Employer Outreach and Engagement:
  • Develop a short- and long-term strategy that focuses on identifying and sourcing new internships that will appeal to students in the College of Letters & Science and underserved and underrepresented student populations.
  • Create an internship program toolkit that will facilitate the creation of new opportunities with interested employers with no history of and/or infrastructure for hosting interns.
  • Visit employers at their workplace to establish working relationships that will generate internships. Field incoming employer inquiries about internship program development and best practices. Track data around employer interactions and progress to disseminate to staff as a resource.
  • Support the planning & execution of occasional internship-related career fairs, in partnership with Assistant Director for Employer Relations
  • Oversee the Federal Work Study - Job Location and Development (JLD) program annual reporting process, and other work study initiatives, in collaboration with the Office of Financial Aid

Campus Engagement and Student Education:
  • Collaborate with the Counseling Team to offer a series of workshops and web-based instructional material that will provide students the knowledge and skills necessary to obtain an internship and navigate the professional workplace. Create customized internship workshops in partnership with campus offices (e.g.., Educational Opportunity Program, Undocumented Students Program, Transfer Student Center, Disabled Student Program, etc.) that traditionally serve the needs of underrepresented students and socio- economically disadvantaged students.
  • Develop a collaborative partnership with the Office of Financial Aid to create and monitor a system that provides eligible students with a stipend for their internship experience.
  • Oversee the Independent U.S. Summer Internship Credit Option in partnership with Summer Sessions, including program updates, advertising, student eligibility, and customer service.
  • Serve as the Career Center's lead on understanding internship law, recruiting practices, guidelines, news, and other resources. Field employer, staff, and campus inquiries, and oversee related web content

Alumni and Parent Engagement:
  • Build collaborative partnership agreements with counterparts in University Development & Alumni Relations (UDAR), the Cal Alumni Association (CAA), and Cal Parents to identify alumni and parents at all levels who are positioned to serve as ambassadors and/or identify who in their organization is in a position to promote increased internship opportunities.
  • Co-coordinate the Cal Externship Program, leveraging technology and identifying and recruiting alumni who are willing to sponsor students for job shadowing & mentorship opportunities. The program role may include marketing to alumni and students, vetting alumni hosts, evaluating and matching students to opportunities, overseeing Pell Grant Recipient travel stipends, and collecting and analyzing qualitative data regarding the host and student experiences with the program.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Five or more years of higher education student services and/or employer recruitment experience
  • Advanced knowledge of college/university programs, career services, employer, alumni, and faculty needs and expectations, recruiting and staffing methods, employment trends.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills including the ability to effectively work with diverse individuals and groups of faculty, staff, students, alumni, and employers.
  • Demonstrated program management and strategic planning skills.
  • Ability to design and deliver presentations/workshops tailored to different audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate, assess, and interpret a variety of program data aligned with programmatic goals and objectives.
  • Knowledge and experience in a diverse cultural environment and working with culturally diverse people.
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to identify problems, develop appropriate resolutions, and take initiative for enhancement of the program.
  • Ability to work independently with a minimum amount of supervision
  • Demonstrated successful experience working with college-level students or recent graduates.
  • Ability to travel is required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Five or more years experience in university career services, student services, alumni relations, employer recruitment, learning & development, and/or internship program coordination.
  • Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Salary & Benefits

This is a full-time, career position. Salary is commensurate with experience. Hiring range is $78,000-$85,000/annually. In keeping with department standard, hybrid work schedules will be available. For information on the comprehensive benefits package offered by the University visit:
