Job Description:

Job duties include but are not limited to:
Performs independently laboratory benchwork.

Maintains, directs and administers the Gwanthmey-Adams Laboratory for Vision Research. This comparative ophthalmology laboratory focuses on inherited eye diseases in veterinary species. Directs the activities of OPS and students (variable numbers annually) that participate in these studies. Maintains documentation of all research studies in both hardcopy and computer backup. Administers accounts and orders supplies. Performs independently data collection from animals, including tonometry, ophthalmic photography and other animal research-related procedures and diagnostics. Animals will require restraint and some lifting.

Data collection, analysis and organization. May include statistical analyses on data collected from ocular studies, comparing drug activities, diurnal intraocular pressure changes, and other variables. Mastery of MS Excel, MS WORD, MS PowerPoint, ADOBE Suite, Corel-Draw and other statistical, spreadsheet and presentation programs is essential. Multiple computer platforms will need to be utilized. Image analysis systems for morphometric type investigations will also be used. Perform library tasks, including literature searches.

Preparing and processing ophthalmic tissues and amniotic membrane for clinical studies.

Prepare and organize classroom and laboratory material to support teaching efforts of the faculty including ordering and organizing supplies and tissues.

Maintenance and organization of laboratory equipment and space assigned to faculty supervisors.

Preparing and processing ophthalmic tissues from the different ophthalmic studies for light and electron microscopy staining, cell and tissue culture, and immunostaining.

Expected Salary:

$44,700

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in biology or a closely related field and three years of relevant experience; or a master's degree in biology or a closely related field and one year of relevant experience; or a doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Working knowledge of experimental design, computers, biostatistics, graphic and drawing programs is important.
  • Ability to work daily with and be comfortable around different animal species.
  • Knowledge of biochemistry, advanced laboratory procedures (Western blotting, cell and tissue culture maintenance, etc) and molecular biology is helpful but not required.
