Job Description:

About the Counseling Department:

The Counseling Department at Saybrook University has two programs, our CACREP Accredited MA Counseling, Clinical Mental Health Counseling Specialization, and a newly launched (Fall 2019) PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision. The curriculum in both programs is grounded in systemic, relational, anti-racist, culturally responsive, and trauma-informed perspectives. Our courses are delivered online, with a combination of synchronous and asynchronous requirements. In addition, we have required residential conferences two times a year in California. We are a highly collaborative department, with unique and highly engaged students. We are adding two new faculty lines in response to our continued enrollment and growth in the counseling department.

General Responsibilities

Saybrook offers a unique hybrid residential/online counseling program. Therefore, applicants do not need to be from the West Coast but must be able to travel to California for one-week Residential Conferences twice a year. Successful applicants will teach core courses throughout the MA and PhD programs of study, support the department chair with program assessment, work closely with students and colleagues, and assume an active role in the ongoing development of our programs. Although the counseling department at Saybrook University is a teaching-focused program, applicants are encouraged to maintain a strong counselor educator identity through leadership and scholarship in the field.

Required qualifications include the following:

  • A doctoral degree in Counselor Education from a CACREP accredited program by date of appointment
  • Commitment to the goals and mission of the university and department
  • Experience with culturally responsive teaching or supervision
  • Professional identity as a Counselor Educator and affiliation with relevant counseling associations (ACA, ACES)
  • Licensure or license eligible in the field.

Preferred Qualifications include the following:

  • Experience teaching and supervising at both the MA and PhD level
  • Demonstration of leadership, scholarship and/or accomplishments in the field
  • Experience with the counseling of relationships/families/children
  • Experience teaching and supporting research courses, and student research
  • Experience and interest in supporting program assessment.
  • Experience in the practice of telehealth for delivering mental health services, or clinical supervision.
  • Experience teaching with online learning platforms, such as Canvas.

Please note: For the protection of faculty, staff, students and all who enter our facilities, Saybrook University has made the decision to require COVID-19 vaccination for all employees, unless granted medical or religious exemption, as a condition of employment beginning January 31, 2022.

Interested applicants should submit a cover letter detailing their qualifications for this position, a curriculum vita, and the names and contact information for three references. Review of applications will begin October 10th, 2021 and will continue until the positions are filled.

Questions about the position can be directed to: Dr. Jennifer Preston, Department Chair,
