PRINCIPAL PURPOSE OF JOB:  

The SNAP-Ed Program Coordinator is responsible for managing and implementing the Kentucky State University Extension SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) across the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The SNAP-Ed Program Coordinator will develop and lead an effective work team of SNAP-Ed agents and program assistants in the Commonwealth to deliver high-quality, effective health and nutrition education for SNAP recipients and others eligible for federal benefit programs. This position focuses on hiring, training, supervising, and supporting Extension’s SNAP-Ed agents and assistants, and managing programmatic efforts carried out by these educators. 


SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY: The SNAP-Ed Program Coordinator has the responsibility for tracking all teaching activities and participants with program reports. The Coordinator will determine the needs of the individuals and families through focus groups, discussion-decision sessions, through partnerships, and surveys in order to strengthen current nutrition classes to develop and create new classes based upon the needs of the target audiences.


The coordinator also provides supervision to program assistants.  The SNAP-Ed Program Coordinator is responsible for planning and teaching nutrition education, food safety, and physical activity classes to low-income individuals and families. The SNAP-Ed Program Coordinator shall participate in all background checks and fingerprinting required by funders and partner agencies in order to achieve the objectives of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed). 


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (ex: duties that are essential to performing the job with or without accommodation)

•    Supervision and program management.

•    Oversee implementation and evaluation of all SNAP-Ed programming in KSU designated areas.

•    Supervise SNAP-Ed agents and program assistants located in the Commonwealth and provide ongoing coaching/training.

•    Oversee their professional development plans, ensuring that each has the resources and expertise needed to effectively carry out their job duties.

•    Monitor and ensure the completion of participant-level documentation.

•    Manage the reporting protocols and evaluation plans implemented by SNAP-Ed educators. Train educators to implement protocols and plans.

•    Analyze programmatic data and financial information to determine ways to better focus resources for effectively and efficiently reaching low-income Kentuckians, and people with health disparities in the region.

•    Analyze and adjust the work of the SNAP-Ed Educators to create the greatest outcomes and impact, and the most efficient use of resources.

•    Ensure accurate, complete, and organized confidential records, as required by the funding agency.

•    Provide expert advice to community-based organizations on the technical aspects of the federal SNAP Education program.

•    Keep abreast of new research and strategies in the field of nutrition. Maintain a sound understanding of community health and nutrition issues as well as public health approaches for addressing them.

•    Maintain a sound understanding of and familiarity with the key partners, stakeholders, and health and nutrition initiatives in the region that have bearing on health and nutrition work.

•    Coordinate and facilitate meetings with staff, stakeholders, and partners.

•    Cultivate new partnerships and maintain professional relationships to further health and nutrition goals.

•    Speak on behalf of Extension priorities and provide informed support and expertise when serving on agency or community boards or advisory committees related to health and nutrition.

•    Prepare timely reports of programmatic activities and success stories in the region.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

•    Master’s degree required in the field of Nutrition, Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition or a related discipline. 


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: 

•    Knowledge in the area of human nutrition, diet management, human health, obesity issues, and related areas.

•    Experience working with low-income and minority audiences 

•    Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in the university setting. 

•    Ability to work under deadlines.

•    Will need a valid State Driver's License. 

•    Working Conditions and Physical Effort: Must be able to move light equipment and boxes under 20 pounds with supplies, publications, and needed equipment for demonstration and training programs.

•    Must be able to travel primarily in state.

•    Must be able to work evenings and weekends

•    Must have own transportation.

Kentucky State University shall admit students to the institution under selective admission standards to which exceed the minimum guidelines established by the Council on Higher Education, with only limited exceptions. Institutional policy for admitting under-prepared students, including the removal of academic deficiencies within a specified time frame. Through this approach, the University seeks to provide broad access and high-quality programs.

Degree Levels
Selected associate and baccalaureate degree programs shall be oriented toward liberal studies and selected career opportunities related to state government services. Kentucky State University shall offer selected master's degree programs based on demonstrated need, with priority given to a public administration curriculum to meet the needs of state government.

Strategic Directions/Program Priorities
The University shall focus on liberal studies programming. Drawing upon its African-American heritage, the University will promote the values and methods of interdisciplinary and multicultural education in its liberal studies offerings. All students shall participate in common curricula that explore the liberal studies. Drawing upon the multicultural strengths of the University, emphasis shall be placed on preparing minority students for careers in education and in other selected professions including business, computer science, nursing, human services, and public services. These strategic priorities translate into a core of liberal arts baccalaureate degree programs, in addition to degree programs at the associate [A], baccalaureate [B], and master's [M] levels that may include the following: education [B]; business [B]; computer science [A,B]; nursing [A]; home economics [B]; human services [B]; and public administration [B,M].

Enhancement of Instruction
The University shall emphasize teaching. Meeting student needs shall be paramount. The University shall focus on the needs of its students, which include, but are not limited to, full-time and part-time residential students, commuting students from its primary service area, and state governmental employees.

Service and Research Functions
Kentucky State University, as the 1890 land grant institution in the system, shall carry out its responsibilities under federal law and participate fully in appropriate U.S. Department of Agriculture programs, in accord with the mission of the University.

Kentucky State University shall be the major repository for the collection of books, records, and artifacts relative to the history and status of African-American citizens of the Commonwealth and elsewhere. The University shall make such materials available for casual and scholarly study.

The priority master's degree program offered by Kentucky State University shall be carefully articulated with related doctoral programs offered by the doctoral-granting institutions in the system.
