The Department of Geography & Planning in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto (St. George campus) invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with an expected start date of July 1, 2022, or shortly thereafter.
Applicants must hold a PhD degree in physical or human geography (or a closely aligned discipline) with a research and teaching focus in geographic information systems (GIS)/spatial data science by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths.
We especially welcome applications from candidates with an interest in the applications of geographic data science and/or GIS in fields such as (in no particular order) public health, transportation, planning, economics, and physical/environmental geography, among others. Experience in some or all the following techniques is required for this position: GIS tools (e.g., Esri Software, R, QGIS etc.), programming languages (e.g., Python, R scripting), big data analysis, and remote sensing.
The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. Candidates will also engage in undergraduate and graduate teaching at the University of Toronto.
Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing.
Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier (with required materials outlined below) submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference. Experience teaching GIS programming, spatial databases, and other relevant data science courses, in addition to a GIS course focused on their area of expertise is an asset.
