Job Description

Key Job Duties:

  • Prepare new requests for printing and searching; verifying holdings in local catalog for holdings, call numbers and circulation status of materials requested on interlibrary lending.
  • Retrieve books requested on interlibrary lending from the Ellis Library stacks.
  • Request materials from collections and holdings located in the specialized libraries and the UM library depositories.
  • Update Merlin/Mobius and other interlibrary lending requests utilizing appropriate library and circulation systems, such as Sierra or ILLiad.
  • Prepare books to be shipped to other libraries; this includes the preparation of mailing labels and the charging of books on library’s circulation system.
  • Prepare nonreturnable requests for scanning and delivery by electronic means or requestor’s specification.
  • Discharge returnable items from other libraries on the library’s circulation system and update records using ILLiad. Renew books when requested.
  • Monitor and order office and shipping supplies as needed.
  • Ensure that all requests are answered with a prompt manner.
  • Assist in training and assigning tasks to student assistants.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Recognizes and solves typical problems that can occur in own work area without supervisory approval; evaluates and selects solutions from established option
  • Impacts the efficiency and accuracy of own work and begins to impact the work of others
  • Provides information to and exchanges information with appropriate and/or various parties

Shift is primarily daytime M-F, 40 hours per week

Minimum Qualifications

A high school diploma and at least 1 year of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Six months of library experience. Directly related education or training may be substituted for experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills. Ability to explain issues clearly and work to satisfactorily resolve problems.
  • Supervisory experience helpful.
  • Flexibility to work different shifts when needed.
  • This position requires some physical stamina and involves moving materials and related physical actions part of the workday. Must be able to move fully loaded book trucks (at least 200 lbs.). Must be able to read call numbers on books located on shelves at ground level and up to nine feet in height and where lighting is diminished; ladders and footstools are available.
