Position Summary:

Governors State University (University Park, IL) is a minority-serving institution inviting applications for a tenure track position as an Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice to begin in the Fall Semester 2022. Highly qualified candidates will demonstrate expertise in social justice/restorative justice issues such as crimmigration, ecocide, prison and police abolition, the political economy of mass incarceration, carceral geography, or related fields. The successful applicant will be expected to regularly teach sections of the core criminal justice courses, such as the Junior Seminar/Senior Capstone, theory, research methods, and an elective in a topical area in their field of expertise. Teaching assignments will include classes on the main campus, online, and at satellite locations. The ability to contribute to our cross-disciplinary programs in Political and Social Justice Studies; Gender & Sexuality Studies; or minors in Latin American, Caribbean, and Latina/o Studies; Global Studies; and/or Black Studies is also preferred. We seek candidates with outstanding teaching skills, evidence of—or potential for—a distinguished record of scholarship as well as service to the institution, discipline, and/or community. We offer joint degree option with a Masters in Public Administration (M.P.A.). Our faculty are dedicated to advancing the teaching, research, and service missions of the university. Minimum Qualifications:

1. Ph.D. in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Sociology, Public Administration or closely associated discipline. ABD in the final stages of completion will also be considered (and may be appointed as Instructor). All degree requirements must be completed by August 15, 2022.
2. Teaching or research interests in social justice/restorative justice issues such as crimmigration, ecocide, prison and police abolition, the political economy of mass incarceration, carceral geography, or related topics.

3. Knowledge and ability to teach core criminal justice courses, such as the Junior Seminar/Senior Capstone, theory, research methods, and an elective in a topical area in their field of expertise. 4. Evidence of proficiency in teaching ability.5. Evidence of potential for strong record of scholarship.6. Ability to complement the program’s strengths.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Experience with non-traditional, first-generation, and/or traditionally underrepresented student populations. 2. Teaching experience at graduate level.3. Experience with teaching online courses.4. Demonstrated ability to infuse course content with scholarship related to underrepresented and underserved groups. 5. The ability to contribute to programs in Political and Social Justice Studies; Public Administration; Political Science; Anthropology & Sociology, Gender & Sexuality Studies; or minors in Latin American, Caribbean, and Latina/o Studies; and/or Global Studies.
