Job Summary Atlanta Metropolitan State College, a four-year degree-granting institution of the University System of Georgia, is accepting applications for an Academic Success Coach/Tutor in the Center for Academic Advising & Student Success (CAAS). Atlanta Metropolitan State College currently serves over 3,000 urban commuting students on its beautifully landscaped campus, which is located 10 minutes south of downtown Atlanta, and 10 minutes north of Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

This is a part-time position for Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 semesters. Academic Success Coaches/Tutors will work with AMSC students by assisting them in developing academic and sound career goals. They will help students cultivate good study habits, prepare them for academic advising and student progression within course(s). Academic Success Coach/Tutor will serve as retention expert for the CAAS center in maintaining positive relationships with students that strongly encourage matriculation toward degree completion.

Continued employment is based on funding and preference will be given to applicants with experience in academic support/tutoring services and retention initiatives. Further, degrees in English, Reading, Literacy Studies, Mathematics, or the Health Sciences are strongly preferred. Completion through upper level subject matter courses, with an A or B in each related course-taken and tutoring experience in specific subject is mandatory.

Responsibilities

This Academic Success Coach/Tutor will be responsible for providing exceptional work ethic within the Division of Student Success, CAAS Office. Essential duties and responsibilities are listed below but not limited to the following:

    Provides academic support services, workshops, individual and/or small group consultative services designed to assist students with developing and implementing tools to succeed academically;Provide academic coaching, outreach efforts to students who have been identified within a special population (i.e. cohort-partnership groups, at-risk, or academic warning);Provide academic and remedial tutorial support to include but not limited to supplemental instruction for students through additional instructional material, agencies, or other resources;Conduct academic success group tutoring mini – lectures/sessions, workshops and make presentations to current students, orientation groups, and/or potential students;Identify academic support resources for improving students’ achievement and persistence;Work closely with Academic Success Professional Advisors with students who have received an academic alert referral and in academic jeopardy;Maintain current knowledge of academic discipline and tutorial strategies that promote student success;Assist front desk with check-in and checkout procedures to include incoming calls, D2L, and student email password resets in the Center for Academic Advising & Student Success
Academic Success Coach/Tutor will assist and connect students with discipline specific study materials to achieve academic success. Academic Success Coach/Tutor in this classification must possess effective communication, and public relations skills, as they are required to interact continually with students. In addition, the Academic Success Coach/Tutor will adhere to strict confidentiality and other ethical standards.

Required Qualifications

Entry into the applicant pool requires a Bachelor’s degree in specific tutoring discipline or a relevant field from an accredited institution (Masters preferred) and at least one year of experience working with undergraduate students or young adults in a tutorial, coaching, academic, retention, or career services counseling capacity at a high school level or in a higher education support setting.

A selected candidate should be able to demonstrate experience or interest in helping students successfully pass their college classes. The successful candidate should be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and possess the ability and desire to provide quality academic support services to students from diverse backgrounds, exhibit a spirit of collegiality, and demonstrates willingness to effectively collaborate and cooperate with other members of the faculty, staff, and administration. Candidate should be willing to work some evenings and weekends. Some nights and weekends may be requested. Knowledge of federal regulations such as Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as it relates to student accommodation is expected.
