Job Description Summary:

The Gracie Production Manager / Lighting Designer is a Husson University staff position which will provide supervisory and hands-on activities focused on the successful organizational, usage and maintenance operations of specific systems within the Gracie Theatre, in close coordination with the New England School of Communications (NESCom), and other schools within the Husson community.
At present, the Gracie Theatre has two full- time staff members; a Managing Director, who oversees the administrative requirements of the facility and a Technical Director who supervises the physical venue and its A/V activities. The Production Manager / Lighting Designer (PM/LD) with work closely with this staff to efficiently and effectively execute the technical needs of all events in the Gracie Theatre.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Gracie PM/LD will be required to:

  • Report to and attend regular Production meetings with the Gracie Managing Director and Technical Director.
  • Create production plans, technical notes and schedules for the technical demands of all events in the Gracie.
  • Attend and provide hands-on assistance for events in the Gracie.
  • Coordinate with the Technical Director on the facilitation of technical riders from Gracie users.
  • Design and/or facilitate all stage lighting, automation and rigging demands for events, curriculum based learning and student activities in the Gracie, including load-ins, performances and load-outs.
  • Assist with Gracie annual Production Season events
  • Assist with Gracie bookings and facility rentals
  • Assist with Husson University events and activities
  • Assist with Open Houses / Accepted Students Day / Homecoming / etc.
  • Assist with Events as booked by Schools within the Husson Community
  • Assist with Student Activities events
  • Assist with NESCom events and activities
  • Assist with “The Nite Show with Danny Cashman”
  • Assist with Other Student Concerts and events
  • Teaching responsibilities may be required as an adjunct instructor for related courses within the NESCom curriculum.
  • When appropriate, assist in instruction, advising, and involvement of students.
  • Provide supervision and support for the use of Student Labor (both paid and curriculum driven) as needed for events and other technical support of Gracie operations
  • Provide supervision and support for the Student activities within the Gracie for events/activities not performed during specifically scheduled and faculty supervised classes.
  • Supervise condition and maintenance of all stage lighting, scene shop, automation and rigging equipment within the Gracie.
  • Including but not limited to the equipment owned by the Gracie as well as NESCom.
  • Report problems, recommend solutions and implement decisions as coordinated with Husson, the Gracie Executive Director, the Gracie Technical Director and NESCom.
  • Ongoing and regular maintenance and updates of Gracie equipment inventories databases.
  • Maintain awareness and proper safe use of equipment in the Gracie in order to promote a safe working and learning environment.
  • Perform other technical support duties as assigned, focused on the efficient operation of the Gracie Theatre and Husson campus.
  • Provide input for short term and long budget planning.

Education and Experience:

Qualifications for PM/LD:

  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with the Husson University campus community and users of the Gracie
  • In-field Master’s or MFS / MFA degree preferred
  • Flexibility in schedule – willing to work evenings and weekends.
  • Physical ability to lift, bend, reach, twist, pull, push, grip, move, climb stairs and ladders, crawl, carry, listen and observe; at times lifting and moving weights in excess of 75 lbs. may be involved and work at heights of as much as 65 feet above the floor. Gross and fine manipulation of tools, connections and controls is also involved.
  • Positive and proactive approach to safety
  • OSHA 10 hour Safety Certification and Genie Lift Certification (or ability to acquire such certifications)
  • Functional familiarity with CAD, Vectorworks, Adobe Suite applications, Microsoft Office
  • Solid Production Management, Stage Lighting and Stagecraft Skills with a minimum of 5 years professional experience in some or all of the above areas

• Routine lifting and movement of large road cases and boxes
• Able to lift a 50 lb. workload
• Safe practice usage of hand and power tools
• Able to climb ladders (if trained)
• Ability to crawl, stoop, pull and squeeze into tight positions

• Ability to read and interpret schematics
• Ability to take instruction and then implement personal task management
