Departmental Objective:

The Office of Human Resources (HR) at Christopher Newport University helps create, instill and foster a phenomenal culture and community to work and learn by attracting, hiring, supporting, developing and serving highly talented caring and committed employees.

Purpose of the Position:

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing high-quality detailed information regarding Commonwealth of Virginia and Christopher Newport University benefit programs, which include an array of retirement and health care plans. The incumbent will provide on-going assistance to employees regarding benefits, supervise the benefits team, coordinate the University benefits fair and provide positive and informative individual and group orientations for new employees.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's) and/or Competencies required and preferred:


Knowledge of benefit programs

Skilled in the use of computers including word processing, database and spreadsheet software; web familiarity

Excellent written and oral communication skills to include demonstrated proper usage of grammar, spelling and punctuation

Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills in working with the public, students, faculty, and staff

Ability to work in a project environment requiring effective time management and the organization of work to ensure timely delivery of services and support

Ability to understand, interpret and disseminate very complex written guidelines and regulations

Ability to manage high priority and competing work demands and work flow

Ability to independently solve problems of a comprehensive and complex nature

Demonstrated ability to apply and interpret complex human resources policies and guidelines

Strong presentation skills

Strong supervisory skills


Knowledge of Commonwealth of Virginia benefit programs

Knowledge and skills using PMIS and BES

Skilled in the use of Microsoft Word, Access and Excel

Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification Required :

Education Required: Associate’s degree or higher in a related field; or high school diploma or equivalent with training and extensive related work experience in the area of Human Resources.

Experience Required: Demonstrated experience in interpreting, implementing and reconciling human resource benefit administration. Experience in the use of computers including word processing, database, spreadsheet software and HR information systems. Previous supervisory experience. Experience leading projects. Experience in interpreting and implementing complex human resource policies.

Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification Preferred :

Education Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, human resource, psychology or related field.

Experience Preferred: Experience in interpreting and applying Commonwealth’s Department of Human Resource Management policies concerning benefits, leave and workers’ compensation. Previous human resource experience in a university/college setting and/or a Commonwealth of Virginia agency. Experience in developing and providing training programs in benefits. Previous experience using Commonwealth of Virginia systems to include the Personnel Management Information System (PMIS) and Benefits Eligibility System (BES). Experience in the use of Microsoft Word, Access and Excel.

Salary Information:

Starting at $65,000-Offer will Commensurate with Education and Experience
