Academic Coordinator-TRIO/ Upward Bound

Position Summary:

The Upward Bound Academic Coordinator position serves low-income, first-generation, or academically disadvantaged high schools students to help them develop the skills needed to succeed in high school and college. This position will identify, recruit and select eligible students for the Upward Bound program, provide direct advising and services regarding the postsecondary enrollment process, and track student cohorts throughout high school and college. The Academic Coordinator will design and deliver educational and skill-building workshops, coordinate career and college exploration opportunities, and provide individualized advising to ensure secondary and postsecondary academic success and opportunity.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate participants' academic needs, administer the program's standardized tests, and monitor participants' academic growth on an ongoing basis.
  • Work closely with tutors and instructors to establish individualized and appropriate academic support plans and services, including visits to target area High Schools.
  • Provide progressive one-on-one college and career advising.
  • Maintain current and complete academic records of all participants. 
  • Assist in the recruitment of middle and high schools students from the target schools.
  • Work closely with school guidance counselors.
  • Manage daily operations of the office.
  • Maintain accurate participant files and other information necessary for evaluations, audits, and tracking databases.
  • Compile and analyze data for reports required by the U. S. Department of Education. Prepare and submit all requested reports in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Attend professional development meetings and conferences.
  • Workplace attendance is essential for job function.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Social Worker.   
  • Two years of work experience in a secondary or higher education setting or related field.
  • Knowledge of and experience with federally funded programs for economically disadvantaged persons.
  • Experience in working with low-income, first-generation, and at-risk high school students.
  • Must have good interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with people from varied social, educational, and economic backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively, both independently and in a diverse team environment.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be able to work without constant supervision, make decisions, and have good judgment.
  • Must be computer literate – Excel, Microsoft Word, and PowerPoint.

Supervision and Evaluation:

  • Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the immediate supervisor in accordance with provisions of the Jarvis Christian College Administrative Policies and Procedures Manual.
