Department Description

The Advancement operation provides the management and coordination of the back office functions to support the campus-based fundraising field staff. These include research, marketing and communications, gift processing, data base management, estate gift planning, and other services. These central services produce economies of scale by eliminating the need for these back office functions to be duplicated on each of the four campuses. They also place the institution in an optimal position to attract substantial support from the philanthropic sector.

Position Description

The University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) Office of Advancement build various levels of support and affinity for the institution through a coordinated effort as part of the university's primary outreach to the community and region. This includes building support and funding through community engagement and alumni outreach efforts, attendance at key events, representation on important initiatives and the creation of partnerships supporting the university's mission. UCCS is one of four campuses in the University of Colorado system and is home to over 9,500 undergraduate and 1,900 graduate students. Colorado Springs (pop. 450K+) is situated at the base of Pikes Peak, offers many recreational and cultural activities and was recently ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top Best Places to Live in the U.S.

The Associate Director of Gift Planning is a centralized University of Colorado (CU) system position embedded within the UCCS Office of Advancement. This position works closely with the Department Head and Senior Director of Gift Planning, the broader CU Gift Planning team, and the UCCS Advancement team to enhance the giving experience by supporting donors and development officers as they explore major and planned gift opportunities.

This position reports to the Department Head and Senior Director of Gift Planning and is exempt from the State of Colorado Classified system.

Duties & Responsibilities 

Duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to: 

  • Embedded in the UCCS Advancement team, this position will partner with UCCS Advancement colleagues  to establish effective gift planning strategies to grow the gift planning prospect pipeline, prioritize approaches, steward prospects and help identify, cultivate and solicit new gift planning prospects. 
  • Leverage the Gift Planning Opportunity Pool to identify prospective donors;  move prospects to become donors through identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship while following the Donor Bill of Rights to achieve established goals. Introductory outreach to prospects to determine their potential as a gift planning prospect and then move these gift planning prospects up the pipeline. 
  • Assist in the evolution of the CU Gift Planning team’s efforts to identify new leads through marketing and proactive prospecting initiatives.  
  • Monitor UCCS gift planning gift planning leads and provide input into any changes made to marketing initiatives in order to improve marketing results.  
  • Maintain a portfolio consisting of a minimum of 25 prospects which will need to be identified/developed by the incumbent. Goals relating to personal contacts, number of proposed gifts, planned gifts and prospect identification to be set with and approved by management.
  • Solicit and close technically simple and straightforward bequests and retirement plan designations.
  • Partner with CU Gift Planning to provide gift planning training to UCCS Advancement.
  • Supports stewardship process for gift planning donors who have already shared their estate intentions with UCCS.
  • Supports system-level gift planning efforts as assigned, such as database maintenance, counting standards, gift acceptance policies, estate distribution efforts, policies and procedures, etc. 
  • Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.

What we offer:

Salary: The salary range has been established at $64,000-$68,000.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education, or equivalent professional experience (professional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis)
  • Three (3) years’ of professional experience securing major gifts and/or planned gifts, fundraising, acting as a financial planner, or directly comparable work.
  • Ability to travel 
Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or post-baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution of higher education in the field of business, business administration, finance, or other closely related fields. 
  • Five (5) years’ experience securing major and/or planned gifts, fundraising, acting as a financial planner, or directly comparable work
  • Experience in a nonprofit, higher education, or healthcare environment
  • Experience working within large, complex organizations
