The Department of English, Film, Languages, and Performing Arts (EFLPA) is a unique collaborative of faculty, staff, and students that brings culture in the arts and humanities to the UWG campus and the outlying Carroll County community. The faculty in each program, English, Film, International Languages and Cultures, Music, and Theatre bring their talents and knowledge to students in all majors and minors. In addition to offering both a BA and a BFA, the Theatre Program and its faculty also team with the faculty in the Music Program to bring students a certificate in Musical Theatre, and are in the midst of collaborating with faculty from each program in the department to offer a certificate in Arts Management.
The Theatre Program is housed in two beautifully renovated historic facilities; Martha Munro Hall and the Old Auditorium, as well as in the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts. UWG is an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Theatre. The UWG Theatre program has a strong reputation for excellence in ensemble work and mentoring young theatre artists.
Job SummaryThis tenure-track position will encompass the normal duties of a full-time faculty member including: teaching four courses per semester with one course per semester reassigned for research/creative activity, student advising, recruitment and committee membership as needed. Individuals will design at least one show per semester and mentor student designers for five theatre productions per year. This position works in close collaboration with the staff Technical Director.
In addition to teaching scenic design, depending on the qualifications of the individual, they may teach course work in one or more of the following areas: scene painting, stagecraft, drafting, software for design, projections and media design, or other design areas where the candidate has expertise. All theatre program faculty members teach some general education courses in the discipline. Required QualificationsThe successful candidate will hold a terminal degree in Scenic Design/ Scenography and show evidence of significant professional work as a scenic designer.
Preferred Qualifications Candidates should have a strong commitment to the collaborative process, a dedication to excellence in theatre education within an undergraduate liberal arts setting, and show significant promise as a scholar and/or creative artist. Knowledge in scene painting, properties design and execution, projections/media design, graphic design, or any other related design area strongly desired. Expertise in Vectorworks, PhotoShop, and related software is also strongly desired.
