Educational and Experience Requirement:

Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or related field. Master’s degree preferred. Current Registered Nurse (RN) Licensure. Four years of teaching experience in nursing or related field in a clinical or academic setting. Demonstrated commitment to student or customer centered approaches and student success. Additional education may be considered in lieu of experience.

Nature & Purpose of Position:

Works directly with SHSU School of Nursing students to improve academic performance through individual and group supports and the coordination of SHSU resources for student success.

Primary Responsibilities:

Implements best practice models for the support of SHSU School of Nursing (SON) student academic success, analyzing and interpreting data to establish an evidenced-based program to increase the retention rate of nursing students. Creates and sustains a supportive student-focused, non-threatening environment for behavioral change related to academic success. Documents student goals, individual learning/performance/remediation plans, and behavioral outcomes. Assists students in identifying academic strengths, challenges, and learning styles to develop a strategic study plan for reaching academic goals. Assists students with time management skills. Directly coaches and tutors nursing students and supports remediation processes. Collaborates with faculty to coordinate improvements in curricular design and development and promote student advocacy. Collaborates with SHSU academic support resources to create value for SON students. Coordinates with Services for Students with Disabilities to support student success. Continuously improves the academic coaching role and related processes at the SON. Positively engages students for their success and wellness. Coordinates with SON Academic Advisor to design and implement programs focused on holistic student wellness. Provides holistic student support by acting as a liaison for the student and student support services. Covers temporary faculty absences in clinical or classroom settings. Assists faculty with exam item analysis or course-related tasks. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Other Specifications:

Previous student coaching experience with individuals and small groups preferred. Prior experience remediating students with academic difficulties. Previous experience working directly with faculty and curricular issues preferred. Experience working with diverse student or customer groups. Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws. Ability to supervise business functions. Communicates with other University departments, personnel, and other agencies.

This position works 10 months out of the year. Incumbent does not work during the months of June or July.

Position will start January 2022 and is located at The Woodlands Center (TWC).
