Chief of Staff, Georgetown Environment and Sustainability Institute - Georgetown University

The Georgetown Environment Initiative (GEI) is a University-wide effort to advance the multidisciplinary study of the environment and sustainability in relation to society, scientific understanding, sound policy, and the complex challenges we face as stewards of the Earth.

The Chief of Staff directs GESI operations, provides support to the GESI Director, and oversee all administration and implementation of strategic plan. They help to manage GESI staff; develop and implement strategies to engage not only the Georgetown student and faculty community, but also external partnerships; and develop, manage and implement financial strategies and plans. Reporting to the GESI Director, the Chief of Staff has duties that include but are not limited to:

Operations
  • Directly manage most full-time GESI staff and interns, coordinating workflow, assisting with communications, processes and procedures; and ensuring adequate division of work, follow-up and overall relation to current goals
  • Manage day to day implementation of the strategic plan
  • Manage all vendor and consultant relationships
  • Interface with University HR operations including, hiring processes, on-boarding of new staff, scheduling of all hourly positions, and timekeeping


Administration and Finance
  • Creates and manages GESI budget and interfaces with all relevant university departments on financial matters and expenditures
  • Manages day to day implementation of a financial plan
  • Serves as a liaison to the University Administration
  • Assists with identifying prospective donors from alumni lists and other prospect research
  • Assists Director with Board and donor relations
  • Identifies grant opportunities and potential sponsors for Institute programming


Special Projects
  • Exercise independent judgment in performing special assignments
  • Resolve, research, assess, and refer problems, often of a sensitive or confidential nature
  • Define problems independently, conduct research as necessary, formulate solutions and make recommendations
  • Provide analytical and administrative support to the Director on a variety of issues, projects, and programs
  • Compiles data, solicit and research information from a variety of sources on- and off-campus, and prepare reports as requested
  • Serve as primary point of contact for collaboration with other similar Institutes around the world


Internal Communications
  • Independently respond to requests from faculty, fellows, staff and students regarding GESI operations and activities
  • Manage general communications between the GESI, the Provost's Office, the Deans and the Office of the President
  • Work closely with the Office of Sustainability of all activities
  • Prepare updates on the progress of GESI too various University administrators as requested
  • Oversee completion of annual report


Student Engagement
  • Develops and oversees implementation of GESI student outreach, leadership recruitment and engagement plan
  • Interfaces with relevant outside academic and student organizations to engage with their student constituencies and involve them in GESI programming
  • Interfaces with faculty members across university schools and departments to identify opportunities to address and engage their students


Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required - Master's degree preferred
  • 8 to 10 years of experience in management and administration, in fields of biology, natural sciences, environmental studies, sustainability science, environmental humanities, advocacy, communications, or related fields
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Ability to communicate ideas and issues clearly, concisely and accurately
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment to perform special
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Strong management skills
  • Collaborative, collegial approach
  • Ability to deal effectively with high-level administrators, faculty members, special guests, and students
