Job Description Summary

The WFU Press Manager is primarily responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the press, including finances/budgeting, administrative tasks, marketing and public relations, sales and customer relations, as well as book production and editorial matters. The Manager also works closely with the Press Director to plan and maintain a publication schedule of 4–6 books a
year, distributed primarily in North America, but also internationally. This is a full-time position, with occasional opportunities for travel.

Essential Functions:


  • Budget management
  • Regular accounting and bookkeeping
  • Recording & tracking sales
  • A/P & A/R
  • Writing and completing contracts and rights administration
  • Managing relationship with book distributor
  • Customer relations and website sales
  • Tracking, reporting, and payout of royalties


  • Managing and supervising internship program—recruiting, hiring, and training
  • Maintaining inventory and warehouse management
  • Keeping good physical and digital files

Marketing and Public Relations:

  • Acting as American agent for Irish poets
  • Arranging and promoting US readings
  • Maintaining website/social media and create content
  • Soliciting book reviews in reputable North American journals and publications
  • Coordinating advertising, both print and digital
  • Writing marketing and cover copy, author bios, etc.
  • Attending conferences to promote the press and WFU Press books


  • Establishing and overseeing the publishing schedule and commitments of the Press
  • Working with freelancers for book design, cover production, etc.
  • Proofreading and copyediting manuscripts, marketing copy, and typeset books
  • Overseeing reprints and revisions
  • Obtaining permissions for poems and artwork


  • Maintaining relationships with poets and overseas publishers
  • Contacting poets and establishing selections for publication
  • Managing and tracking submissions to press
  • Working with poets/editors on editorial changes throughout production process

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree plus at least two years of experience in publishing or related field
  • Knowledge and understanding of Wake Forest University Press, its mission and general history
  • Basic knowledge of poetry and poetic terminology
  • Experience with web/content management system such as WordPress
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Excellent time management and attention to detail
  • Familiar with Chicago Manual of Style
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, and major social media platforms

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, especially InDesign and Photoshop
  • Experience in book marketing
  • Basic knowledge of Irish history
  • Basic knowledge of graphic design and video production
