About This Position

The department of Health and Safety at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine has an exciting opportunity for Full Time Fire Safety Officer, Occupational Health, Safety & Compliance.

The Hospital Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring that all Joint Commission guidelines for the Physical Environment of Care standards at the assigned hospital and/or hospital based clinics remain compliant. This includes annual review and completion of the Periodic Performance Review (PPR), which include the following Joint Commission Chapters: Life Safety (LS), Emergency Management (EM), and Environment of Care (EOC).

The incumbent will be responsible for overseeing management of the Physical Environment program, in order to maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors and personnel. This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring safety programs and initiatives for the University of Miami Hospitals and Clinics (UMHC). Manages the Environment of Care (EC) Safety and Life Safety Plans to minimize hazards and reduce risk of injury to patients, visitors, third party vendors and employees is a major responsibility of this position. Incumbent serves as a designated Safety Officer and participates as an active member of the UHealth Environment of Care committee. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of the Safety & Compliance.

This position is directly responsible for all compliance activities associated with the CMS conditions of participation and Joint Commission standards as outlined within the Life Safety, Environment of Care and NFPA standards across the entire UHealth System (UMHC & UMMG).

  • Leads internal fire safety audits and inspections in all assigned areas of the organization.

  • Provides support to the Director of EOC Compliance, regarding safety improvement efforts.

  • Plans, Coordinates & Conducts first, second and third shift fire drills at all UHealth locations.

  • Ensures fire drill findings are documented, analyzed, and reported to department heads for corrective action and the Environment of Care Committee.

  • Conducts annual fire safety buildings inspections.

  • Conducts audits of the fire safety systems ITMs and compliance documentation.

  • Serves as a subject matter expert for NFPA compliance to all areas of the organization and assists all departments in complying with the fire safety standards.

  • After inspecting buildings, if the Fire Safety Officer has identified any code violations or failures to adhere to appropriate regulations, he or she is responsible for addressing these violations.

  • Develops and Coordinates Fire Safety Plans of Corrections.

  • Perform fire risks assessments and implements Interim Life Safety Measures as required.

  • Responsible for developing and implementing fire safety education and training to all facility and UHealth staff.

  • Reviews, approves, and enforces requirements for the Hot Work Permit Program.

  • Ensure UHealth staff is adequately aware of fire safety code and preventative measures to facilitate the safety of a building and its employees and reduce violations.

  • Approves hot work permits as required by OSHA 1910.252

  • Uses computer applications or other automated systems, such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, email and database software in performing work assignments; May access protected health information (PHI) in accordance with departmental assignments and guidelines defining levels of access (i.e., incidental v. extensive).

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field such Safety, Occupational Health, Fire Science or Environmental Science is required.

  • Minimum Five years of relevant experience

  • Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.

  • Ability to effectively plan, delegate and/or supervise the work of others.

  • Knowledge of building and construction activities with additional expertise in fire protection devices, building materials, exit design, wall ratings, lighting, occupant capacity and combustible material storage.

  • Certified Hospital Safety Officer (must be obtained within 3 months of employment)

  • Certified Life Safety Specialist Healthcare (must be obtained within 3 months of employment)

  • Certified Fire Inspector I (must be obtained within 3 months of employment)

  • Certified Fire Alarm ITM Specialist (must be obtained within 6 months of employment)

  • OSHA 30 General Industry Certification (must be obtained within 12 months of employment)

  • OSHA 30 Construction Industry Certification (must be obtained within 12 months of employment)

  • FEMA IS-100(HCb), IS-200, IS-700, and IS-800 (must be obtained within 6 months of employment)
