Candidates are expected to hold a baccalaureate degree in engineering or a related field, and a doctorate in biomedical engineering or a related field. The anticipated start date is August 22, 2022.
The Biomedical Engineering Program at UVM leverages strong curricular and research ties with the University’s Larner College of Medicine and the University of Vermont Medical Center (a regional referral center providing advanced care for more than 1 million patients), which are located in very close proximity on the same campus. The Program values interdisciplinary research and innovative approaches to engineering education, as illustrated by a new undergraduate curriculum focused on design thinking and active learning. External research funding has expanded rapidly in recent years, fueled by shared resources like the Vermont Advanced Computing Core and strong connections with the Larner College of Medicine. We are seeking a new team member to support this growth. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a thriving and externally funded research program, teach undergraduate and graduate courses in BME, and advise and mentor students at all levels. All qualified applicants will be considered, but we are particularly interested in those who work in areas that complement existing research strengths of the BME Program and the Larner College of Medicine. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to the ideals of accessibility, inclusiveness, and academic excellence as reflected in the tenets of Our Common Ground. To that end, candidates must provide a diversity impact statement as part of the application detailing how they will further the diversity of the unit through their teaching and service at the University.UVM is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or any other category legally protected by federal or state law.The scientific and academic environments in the Department of Electrical and Biomedical Engineering, the College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, and throughout the UVM community are dynamic, highly collaborative, and multi-disciplinary. Reflecting our innovative and collaborative spirit, our faculty actively collaborate in their teaching and research with faculty in other UVM Colleges and Schools, plus the UVM Medical Center that shares our campus. The successful candidate will be joining UVM following a period of unprecedented growth that has led to the successful completion of world-class STEM facilities, the development of an ABET-accredited BS degree, and expansion of MS and PhD degrees in BME. The University of Vermont’s hilltop campus looks out across one of America’s most vibrant small cities to Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains beyond. Here, students’ educational experience and activities are enriched by our location — from the energy and innovation of Burlington to the forests, farms, and independent spirit of Vermont.

UVM is a Public Ivy and top 100 research university of a perfect size, large enough to offer a breadth of ideas, resources, and opportunities, yet small enough to enable close faculty-student mentorship. With a commitment to undergraduate education, UVM professors — world-class researchers, scholars, and artists — bring their discoveries into the classroom and their students into the field.

You’ll find UVM faculty and students studying the effects of climate change aboard the Melosira, a research vessel and floating lab; testing new vaccines at the on-campus medical center; launching local start-ups; and working with refugees at Burlington community centers.
