Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

The Department of Recreation and Wellness is a broad program located in the Division of Student Affairs, which includes organized and informal sports, fitness, outdoor adventure, and experiential education programming. Our mission is to foster comprehensive wellness by engaging students and the UNCG community in experiential and educational opportunities. We promote lifelong success through meaningful and inclusive programs and resources.

Position Summary:

The Assistant Director, Aquatics & Risk Management will provide effective leadership and oversee daily operations of Aquatics facilities, programs, and staff. This position will have direct supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator, a graduate assistant, and 30+ student employees. This position is responsible for developing risk management policies and procedures for indoor and outdoor aquatic environments and plays an essential role in risk management and safety education across the department. The Assistant Director, Aquatics & Risk Management directs all needs for the Aquatics program, including staffing, reservations, marketing, budget, maintenance, and equipment.

This position will provide student development that reinforces and enhances classroom and academic learning through the application of related theories and employee-related skills. The position is also responsible for the development of programs appropriate for various populations within the UNCG community, promoting the development of student leaders and healthy lifestyles through engagement, and programmatic assessment of student learning.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of three years of demonstrated experience in aquatics facility management and programming
  • Certified Instructor for First Aid, CPR, AED for the Professional Rescuer
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) Certification or ability to obtain within 3 months of employment
  • Lifeguard Certification and Lifeguard Instructor (LGI)
  • Knowledge in planning, organizing, and implementing aquatics programs
  • Knowledge of pool mechanical systems and water chemistry.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Strong commitment to the development of students to provide leadership training, support academic success, and professional development
  • Budget management experience
  • Ability to work occasional evening and weekend hours in addition to regular University hours.

Key Responsibility:

Facility Operations

Essential Tasks:

Oversee daily operations of the natatorium, including a 25-yard by 25-meter lap pool, activity pool with a zero-depth entry, vortex, and shallow wading area, wet classroom, sundeck, and sauna.
Oversee waterfront operations at Piney Lake, a 40+ acre outdoor recreation satellite facility, including policies and procedures, patron equipment, and lifeguard supplies.
Serve as point of contact for all natatorium reservations and special events, including creating and sending facility use agreements and invoices, gathering appropriate insurance, and NCAA compliance, youth programs policy, etc.
Ensures compliance with federal and state policies and regulations related to facility management including life safety, risk management, ADA, and other codes as applicable.
Serve as the liaison between Facilities Operations, Facility Services, and Environmental Health & Safety for pool operations and upkeep of natatorium.
Continually assess policies and procedures for the natatorium.

Risk Management

Essential Tasks:

Assess, evaluate, and mitigate risk for aquatics facilities and programs to ensure that facility is in line with university compliance and state standards.
Serve as Risk Management Committee Chair for the department and actively works with each area within RecWell to assess and evaluate risk management procedures.
Plan and conduct external risk management review, report findings, and develop action plans to address review findings.
Manage Red Cross safety courses for department, campus, and community and serve as the American Red Cross point of contact.
Teach and/or coordinate LG, Waterfront, LGI, CPR, and CPR Instructor certification courses for the department.
Maintain first aid and emergency response supplies for the department.
Create and implement student staff risk management continuing education for the department.
Implement and review facility-specific Emergency Action Plan for Natatorium and Piney Lake Waterfront.

Create and monitor the annual Aquatics budget for staffing and operational needs.
Use appropriate university financial policies and tools to ensure revenue and expenses are tracked and optimized.
Coordinate marketing and communication needs for Aquatics, such as website updates, flyers, social media, emails, and post-event surveys.
Develop and assess program goals to align with strategic initiatives within Recreation and Wellness, Student Affairs, and UNCG.
Create and analyze daily, semester-long, and annual participation statistics; generate reports as needed.
Working knowledge of all technology utilized, including Fusion, EMS, Connect2, TimeTap, WhenToWork, Handshake, TimeClock Plus.

Supervise the Aquatics Coordinator.
Provide direct supervision of the Aquatics Graduate Assistant.
Supervise 30+ part-time student employees in roles of Aquatics Program Assistant, Head Lifeguard, Lifeguard, Piney Lake Lifeguard, Lifeguard Instructor, Water Safety Instructor.
Lead professional staff and student staff Red Cross instructors to coordinate and instruct Red. Cross classes for department and community at regular intervals throughout the year that coordinate with hiring and training cycles.
