Research Director, Maternal and Child Health Evidence Center Georgetown University Medical Center

Research Director, Maternal and Child Health Evidence Center - Georgetown University Medical Center

The Research Director leads research efforts for the Strengthen the Evidence Base for Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Programs initiative, a consortium-based approach to providing expert consultation, technical assistance, training, and resources to assist states and jurisdictions to develop evidence-based and evidence-informed programs to support women, children, families, and communities.

The Research Director has primary responsibility for the development of evidence analysis reviews and evidence summaries for use by State Title V programs to improve the physical and mental health, safety and well-being of women, children, and their families; and manages all aspects of the evidence review and summary process, including leading multidisciplinary research teams to implement a structured approach to evaluate the available empirical evidence and to draw conclusions for MCH programs based on the best available evidence. Reporting directly to the Principal Investigator/Executive Director of the National Center for Education in Maternal and Child Health (NCEMCH), as well as to the Administrator for the Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development (GUCCHD), the Research Director has duties that include but are not limited to:

Conceptualization and strategic planning
  • Provide research and evaluation expertise
  • Review background documents and relevant resources to inform the development of evidence analysis reviews, evidence summaries, and related resources
  • Partner with the Principal Investigator, sponsor, and other collaborators to devise the approach and process for completing evidence analysis reviews, evidence summaries, and other documents
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and partners on varied research projects
  • Develop research agenda and plan for future research endeavors


Team and project management
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams to develop evidence analysis reviews, evidence summaries, and other documents
  • Conduct research team calls and communicate regularly with team members
  • Assign tasks and provide feedback to team members
  • Develop project management processes
  • Track tasks, progress, and timelines
  • Communicate regularly with the Principal Investigator about project milestones


Literature review and study analysis
  • Work with librarians on literature searches
  • Conduct literature reviews and synthesize information
  • Identify and summarize evidence-based and evidence-informed strategies and policies
  • Review grey literature
  • Perform data analysis and critically analyze data


Writing, editing, proofreading, and dissemination
  • Take pimary responsibility for writing and editing evidence analysis reviews, evidence summaries, and other resources
  • Assign writing and editing tasks to team members
  • Address feedback from external reviewers, funders, and other partners
  • Work with a graphic designer on the format and layout of evidence analysis reviews, summaries, and other documents for dissemination
  • Create strategies for MCHbest database: Bank of Evidence-linked Strategies and Tools
  • Prepare resources, manuscripts, grant proposals, curricula, etc., as needed and appropriate


Expert consultation
  • Assist the Principal Investigator in the conceptualization and preparation of other relevant work for the MCH Evidence Center
  • Provide research guidance and expertise to other projects within the MCH Evidence Center
  • Provide evaluation expertise, as needed
  • Provide virtual technical assistance to state and local health center staff related to the evidence behind potential strategies, as needed


Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a relevant field - for example, health services, public policy, social services
  • 5 to 10 years of relevant experience [or equivalent combination of education and work experience]
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to problem solve and to work well both collaboratively and independently
  • Strong organizational, management, conceptual, and analytical skills
  • Experience in the development and design of research tools, surveys, and questions.
  • Data analysis and program evaluation experience
  • Knowledge of state and community service delivery systems, State Title V programs, National Performance Measures, national surveys and datasets, and current federal directions in maternal and child health
  • Ability to operate with minimal supervision


Preferred qualification

Computer skills using data communication and statistical software packages
