Responsibilities

Collection management responsibilities
  • Under the supervision of the Chief Preparator, ensure that objects are properly stored and cared for, according to professional museum standards.
  • Coordinate, in collaboration with departmental colleagues, the handling, unhousing, and rehousing of objects to be viewed by curators, scholars, etc.
  • Coordinates, in collaboration with departmental colleagues, the storage and fabricates, as needed, archival housing of objects, identifying appropriate available space.
  • Maintains up to date records regarding object locations in tandem with other preparators.
  • Monitor environmental conditions (relative humidity, temperature, dust, pest control)
  • Work with Director of Collections and Exhibitions, Chief Preparator andAcademic Liaison in the Education Department to make artworks accessible for classes, advising on parameters of safe and appropriate display of artworks.
  • Makes artworks accessible for contract photographer/s as needed.
  • Assists the Registration Department with the documentation, processing, and preparation needs of new acquisitions, including measuring and noting inscriptions and any rehousing needs.
  • Monitors collection objects for conservation-related issues and alerts the Director of Collections and Exhibitions and Chief Preparator to problems.
  • Helps coordinate and serve as one of the key members of the staff team to manage periodic inventories of the collection.
  • Provides support of collection-based grant projects, such as working with cataloger/s to help organize and make works on paper accessible.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of collection management policies.
  • Research, purchase, and replenish archival supplies within budget constraints.

Framing responsibilities
  • Mats, hinges, and frames works on paper.
  • Frames paintings.
  • Researches appropriate historical frame styles and materials.
  • Coordinates with outside framers as needed.
  • Maintains tools, equipment, and inventory of matting and framing supplies.

Gallery installation
  • Installs and de-installs wide-ranging art objects for exhibitions.
  • Wraps, packs and transports works of art locally.
  • Other preparation work as needed.

Photography
  • In coordination with professional photographer as needed, photograph artwork as needed. Process image and embed metadata.

Required Qualifications
  • Knowledge of and experience with art museum collection management practices.
  • Knowledge of archival storage and housing methods for artworks.
  • Understanding of physical nature, physical needs, level of fragility of wide-ranging artworks.
  • Knowledge and experience of standard art handling methods.
  • Advanced knowledge of archival matting and framing methods.
  • Knowledge of historical frame styles.
  • Familiarity with location tracking systems, both manual and electronic.
  • Collaborative skills and the proven ability to work well as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and manage workload.
  • Knowledge and experience in identifying and evaluating condition problems in works of art, and recommends when a conservator may need to be brought in for artwork treatment.
  • Proven experience with diverse art media.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Thorough knowledge of BAM/PFA's collections, programs, and services.
  • Bachelors in Fine Arts or Bachelor of Arts degree.
