The Physician Assistant provides routine care and management of patients with acute and chronic complaints under the specialty of Sports Medicine. The Physician Assistant will report to and be managed by the supervising physician he/she is assigned to. The Physician assistant will have an opportunity to serve as first assistant in surgery under the supervision of the attending physician and will perform complex orthopedic and other medical procedures. The incumbent will assist surgeons in patient care before, during and after surgery. This position will provide secondary, and in some cases tertiary care within the scope of practice, licensure and organizational policies. The Physician Assistant role is diverse, involving close relationships with the surgeon and patients. This position will primarily provide ambulatory clinical services, including taking histories, conducting physical examinations, ordering, performing, triaging, and interpreting appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests and therapies, and furnishing drugs and devices in a cost-efficient manner for specific conditions. Emphasis is placed on health promotion, disease prevention and patient education, combining the qualities of both nursing and medicine. The Physician Assistant acts as a health care resource and role model to staff by maintaining a high degree of ethics and integrity. Duties include triaging phone calls, message management, reviewing critical labs, follow-up of lab results with patient and medical staff, conducting in-depth interviews with patients and/or family, constructing comprehensive medical histories, performing initial and periodic physical examinations, and exploring patient's interpretation of health needs. The Physician Assistant will participate as needed with inpatient rounds, writing progress notes, conducting patient education, writing prescriptions, and preparing discharge summaries. Incumbent will identify and treat patient's diseases and manage treatment of hospitalized patients. Compensation Range: $71.80 - $98.58 Department Website: https://www.orthopaedicsurgery.uci.edu/
Required: Ability to exercise diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with doctors, nurses, other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement. Skill at clearly communicating medical information to broad variety of people, both in person and on the telephone. Knowledge of when specific diagnostic tests are indicated according to written protocol. Skill in performing diagnostic tests according to protocol. Skill to read medical instruments, editing data for errors and making necessary changes. Maintains clinical competence in the delivery of patient care in the specialty area. Corrections of treatment modalities. Ability to be trained in the use of specialized medical equipment and procedures. Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes. Ability to perform various medical procedures. Knowledge of the elements of a medical history and skill in the history-taking process. Experience working in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Knowledge of applicable billing practices for PA services Applicants are expected to meet the legal requirements to practice as a Physician's Assistant as determined by graduation from a training program approved by the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of California; to be certified by the State Board of Medical Examiners or the National Board of Medical Examiners. Must possess a California Physician Assistant License or current national certification. Must have current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification. Must have current Advance Life Support (ACLS) Certification. Must successfully complete the UCI Medical Center credentialing/privileging process. Must have a current DEA number from the US Drug Enforcement Administration and CURES registration upon hire. Preferred: Minimum of 1-2 years of experience coordinating sports medicine, (interventional and medical treatments) with healthcare providers and interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary care teams. Experience with clinical trials coordination Familiarity with UC policies and procedures EPIC-EMR system Special Conditions Required:Must be willing to travel between all orthopedic practice locations that includes but is not limited to the following: UCI Medical Center Campus, Pavilion 3 Orthopedic Clinic in Orange, Costa Mesa Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center, Tustin Orthopedic Clinic, and other regional sites based on the attending schedule.
