General Description

Under the direction of the Dean, Educational Support Services and the Hanford Educational Center Provost, the Senior Instructional Specialist (Hanford) will assist in overseeing the daily operations of the Writing Center, Math Lab and Tutoring Center at the Hanford Educational Center. Will supervise and assist in the training of student tutors; and tutor incoming students according to established policies, pedagogy, and best practices.

This position is a 10 month, part-time (24 hours/week) position. The work schedule will be:

Monday, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Tuesday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Wednesday/Thursday, 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Initial salary placement will be $24.90 per hour.

Job Duties

Job duties of the Senior Instructional Specialist include:

  • Tutor incoming students according to the policies, pedagogy, and best practices of the Writing Center, Math Lab, and Tutoring Center as appropriate.
  • Provide work direction and supervision to student tutors; monitor tutor attendance; in conjunction with the Writing Center, Math Lab, and Tutorial Center coordinators, train tutors in policies, pedagogy, and best practices.
  • Assist coordinators and Provost in data collection and analysis systems to ensure accurate data collection; compile, prepare and tabulate statistics for the Math Lab, Writing Center, and Tutorial Center in Hanford.
  • Assist with coordination of marketing and outreach services for the Math Lab, Writing Center and Tutorial Center in Hanford.
  • Monitor lab management software; assist student users in signing into and out of the lab management software.
  • Maintain and distribute accurate schedules for the Writing Center, Math Lab, and Tutorial Center; assist students in making appointments with Writing Center tutors.
  • Assist students with computer skills; explain and demonstrate computer software programs.
  • Assist the Writing Center, Math Lab, and Tutorial Center Coordinators with recruiting, screening, selecting, and evaluating student tutors; assist student tutors in completing hiring paperwork.
  • Store supplies, materials and equipment; assure that adequate supplies, materials, and equipment are available for student and tutor use.
  • Maintain lab area in a safe, clean and orderly condition; prepare and maintain records and reports as necessary.
  • Attend staff meetings and participate in other District committees as requested; attend Writing Center training course as appropriate.
  • Attend professional development opportunities as available.
  • Travel from site to site as needed.
  • Utilize the District's integrated software in performing the required duties of the position.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience):

Any combination equivalent to:

  • Bachelor's degree and.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in a tutorial or teaching setting.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience in tutorial or in a teaching setting.
  • Course work or training in adult learning theory, tutoring theory, or pedagogy.

Licenses and Other Requirements:
  • Valid California's driver's license
  • An incumbent must be insurable at the "standard rate" by the employer's insurance carrier at all times while employed in this classification by the College of the Sequoias Community College District.

Organization

College of the Sequoias is a two-year California community college offering educational and enrichment programs for the residents of its district in Tulare and Kings counties. The college was established in 1925 and moved to its current 62-acre main campus site in Visalia in 1940.

In addition to the campus in Visalia, COS operates a full-service center in Hanford that is also home to the college's police and fire academies.

COS also opened its Tulare College Center in January 2013. It is a full-service college center and the home of COS' agriculture program
