Job Description
The University of Maryland School of Medicine has an opening for an Animal Census Clerk to work as a part of the Program in Comparative Medicine and Veterinary Resources’ Business Office. This position will work under the supervision of the Program Manager for Animal Business Operations. The Census Clerk is responsible for the creation and collection of animal cage cards. This includes scanning and uploading information into the department database. This position requires daily physical activity. Census Clerk must be able to spend long periods of time on her/his feet and walk between animal facilities each day. This includes walking outdoors between buildings on UMB campus.

Exemptions for medical or religious reasons will be processed through Human Resources.  Essential Functions:
  • Creating cage card entries into web-based database via mobile tablets
  • Printing cage cards from mobile printers, activating cage card census and posting cards to animal cages
  • Collecting cage cards for cages no longer in use, scanning cards for census deactivation into databases to ensure proper reporting and billing
  • Sorting and filing of physical cage cards for storage
  • Completing weekly mobile census scans, uploading scan details to web-based database
  • Reviewing uploaded census scans, addressing and correcting any ‘Warnings or Errors’ that appear on scans (incorrect cost centers, room transfers, bar code not readable, etc.), posting census scans
  • Processing investigator or VR supervisor transfer requests as needed

Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma or GED.
Experience: Two years related work experience.
Preferred: Prior experience caring for animals or in Laboratory Animal Science.
Other: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
General knowledge of animal census procedures. Skill in the use of computer keyboards, calculators and tablets. Ability to make arithmetic computations; to communicate and interact effectively with customers, campus community, vendors, and employees; to stand and walk for extensive periods; to lift, transport, and stock merchandise weighing up to 50 lbs.
 
 
Based on the duties of this position, selected candidates are eligible to participate in the Bargaining Unit (Union).
 
 
Salary Range: $32,000 - $35,000
