Position Summary:

The Academic Advisor is a full-time staff position who reports to the B.A. Psychology Department Chair and works closely with academic administrators, faculty, and staff. An Academic Advisor will advise undergraduate students on their academic plans and progress in their degree completion, manage academic scheduling each term, provide guidance on graduate program pathways and career planning, develop and manage advising workshops, aid student in making decisions concerning educational goals, and supports retention initiatives. The advisor must frequently exercise discretion and independent judgment in developing and implementing advising workshops, materials, presentations, and student outreach.

Academic Advisors are expected to possess extensive knowledge about academic programs, policies, procedures, and student support services within the scope of their responsibilities. They must be able to interpret student needs and provide individualized service to students with various needs.

Principal Duties:

  • Maintain the mission, quality and integrity of the program, reflecting TCSPP standards.
  • Advise and schedule students for program courses each academic term, in consultation with the Academic department and Student Support department.
  • Establish and maintain student academic records.
  • Manage and provide detailed reports on academic advising outcomes.
  • Develop and manage advising workshops and materials to further student success in time management, study skills, and other methods to ensure academic success.
  • Serves as a resource for department leadership, faculty and staff in matters related to academic support services.
  • Serve as a liaison between students and faculty.
  • Meet with students who are returning to the program to identify methods of increasing the likelihood of their academic success upon their return.
  • Work in tandem with Faculty Advisors on workshops and maintain student records.
  • Collaborate with university personnel on all policies and processes impacting student advising.
  • Attend and participate in the Online department and campus meetings.
  • Work in a team-oriented environment that emphasizes collaboration and personal accountability.
  • Evidence of compatibility with the TCSPP mission

Position Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in Education, Counseling, or academic field directly related to the Academic Advisor's specific responsibilities. A Master’s Degree is preferred.
  • One (1) year of experience related to the above-described duties.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience advising adult learners.
  • Record of success in student retention and advising, including with non-traditional learners
  • Commitment to advocating for the learning and development needs of students in distance learning environments
  • Experience with data-based decision making in academic environments
  • Knowledge of learning styles, motivational strategies, study skills and obstacles to learning.
  • Excellent human relations skills, with the ability to guide and motivate others.
  • Ability to analyze situations, develop solutions and make independent decisions.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Team-oriented approach.
  • Strong initiative, judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to organize work in fast-paced environment in a process-oriented way.
  • Ability to perform duties independently, with a minimal need for direct supervision.
