Eastern Washington University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Computer Engineering to begin September 2022.

Eastern Washington University is a midsize regional, comprehensive institution offering high-quality liberal arts and professional undergraduate and graduate programs in Cheney, Spokane, and elsewhere in Washington State. The Spokane metropolitan area is home to over 400,000 diverse residents and offers great four-season outdoor recreational opportunities and a vibrant arts and cultural community.

The position is housed in the College of STEM, in the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering (CSEE), where we offer academic programs leading to ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering, as well as in Computer Science.

The Electrical and Computer Engineering program is supported by 8 faculty members and serves roughly 100 undergraduate students. In Fall 2020, the CSEE department moved from the main campus in Cheney to a new 140,000 square-foot facility in downtown Spokane's University District (however, first year students still take classes in the main campus in Cheney). This facility is a public-private partnership with the regional tech industry to create a high-tech hub for innovation and entrepreneurship. It will offer our students and faculty outstanding new opportunities for collaboration with regional industry and other universities. Through teaching and research, the successful candidate will capitalize on the creative and intellectual opportunities made possible through these partnerships.

Candidates from all areas of Computer Engineering will be considered; however, preference may be given to candidates with background in high performance reconfigurable hardware (FPGA, PSoC, etc.), IoT security, or embedded systems. Candidates should have a demonstrated potential or record for effective teaching and outstanding research at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. If pertinent, student evaluations may be requested at the time of interview.

Required Qualifications:
  • A Ph.D. in Computer Engineering or closely related engineering discipline. ABDs, will be considered but Ph.D. is required by appointment date 9/16/22;
  • Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching core Computer Engineering coursework;
  • Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching advance coursework in Computer Engineering;
  • Demonstrated potential for excellence in innovative research and scholarly activity;
  • Demonstrated ability to apply a culturally responsive and flexible approach that is supportive to the diverse needs, including universal access, of our students, faculty, staff and the public.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Preference may be given to candidates with expertise in either;
    • high performance reconfigurable hardware (FPGA, PSoC, etc.), or
    • IoT security or
    • embedded systems


  • Preference may be given to candidates with relevant college-level teaching experience.

Responsibility / Duty: A Faculty Activity Plan will be developed by the end of the first quarter of the selected candidate’s appointment, and will consist of a combination of teaching, research, service, and/or release time to perform administrative duties, as negotiated and as needed to meet the business needs of the department.
Additionally , all faculty are expected to engage in effective teaching and assessment of student learning.
  • Meet all schedule classes;
  • Plan, organize and inform students of the course content, texts, readings, assignments, attendance regulations and methods of evaluation including grading scales;
  • Schedule and attend office hours;
  • Turn in grades according to established deadlines;
  • Advise students who are declared majors on department, college and University requirements and career opportunities.

Conditions of Employment:
This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value; as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion and passing of a background check and applicant certification prior to beginning employment.

All new employees must comply with EWU immunization Policy 602-02 and provide proof of immunity or vaccination to MMR and proof they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before beginning work at EWU. Waivers for the immunization requirements are available for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs.


Salary Information: The expected salary upon hire is $90,236.
