Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Student Life, The Assistant Director provides leadership in the administration and supervision of student organizations, and programming initiatives across campus to promote academic excellence, educational and developmental programming, community service, and responsible social events. The Assistant Director serves as the Fraternity & Sorority Life advisor, advising recruitment, Fraternity and Sorority governance organizations and Fraternity and Sorority presidents. The Assistant Director oversees major campus programming including Senior Celebrations and in collaboration with the Assistant Dean of Student Life and Director of Student Activities the co-curricular engagement program and campus engagement platform, Presence. The Assistant Director leads the office team in the development and implementation of student leadership development initiatives. The Assistant Director works closely with the Director to develop and implement departmental goals and programming efforts. Associate Director level is a possibility for expanded scope of work for candidates with experience.

Duties/ Primary job responsibilities 

  • Function as a core team member for the Student Activities & Leadership office, and is present to assist the Assistant Dean/Director, Specialist and other Assistant/Associate Directors at major department events including Senior Week, Orientation, Laurentian Weekend and other major, higher risk campus events.
  • The Assistant Director works closely with the Assistant Dean/Director to advise student clubs and organizations on operational issues including fiscal management and liability especially training and utilization of Presence student engagement platform for student organization management and event publicity.
  • Work closely with students and staff relative to student leadership and development, including creating and implementing a campus leadership program to include: 1) on-campus leadership conference for current student leaders; 2) Regular workshops on leadership development for students who are emerging leaders and/or have an interest in exploring their leadership strengths and identity
  • Serve as the departmental liaison to the Office of Wellness Education, helping to coordinate Student Activities related Wellness initiatives in collaboration with student clubs and organizations.
  • Serve as office lead in planning of First Saturdays Alternative to Alcohol Programming in collaboration with student organizations.
  • Advise senior class council, including senior events (100th Night, Senior Week/Celebrations); oversee senior week event planning and risk management practices and hiring/training/supervising student staff.
  • Supervision, evaluation, training, and development of Fraternity and Sorority Organization members and leaders, including; 1) Advising Panhellenic, fraternity, and sorority councils, fraternity and sorority presidents, and Gamma Sigma Alpha honorary; 2) Planning fall and spring recruitment periods in conjunction with student recruitment chairs; 3) Ensuring all fraternity and sorority students enjoy a living and learning environment that is  physically and emotionally safe, secure, and supportive of the educational process, and holds individuals and groups responsible for their behavior; 4) Assessing and maintaining record-keeping and risk management practices; 5) Develop and maintain training on hazing compliance and awareness for Greek organizations and other student groups on campus with selective application/entry processes and provide ongoing workshops and training information to these groups about hazing. 
  • Work closely with the Associate Director of Student Activities & Leadership to build synergy between the service opportunities and organizations on campus and fraternity and sorority life philanthropy events.
  • Coordinate Advisor Resources for the faculty/staff advisors to student organizations. This includes development and maintenance of the advisor guide on the Student Activities & Leadership Website and coordination of a once a semester meeting for club/organization advisors. The Assistant Director also assists clubs and organizations in search of a new faculty/staff advisor.
  • Plan and implement major campus programming and traditions: Senior Celebrations (including hiring, training, supervising student staff), assist with concerts and other large-scale events.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 1-3 years of experience in student life, undergraduate student leader or graduate assistant experience acceptable
  • Understanding of emerging issues in higher education, particularly in fraternity and sorority life and student leadership development
  • Applied understanding of student development theories
  • Demonstrated intercultural competence, and a continuing commitment to advance equity, inclusion, and social justice practices in support of a diverse community.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Willingness to work evening and weekends as student programming needs and major events require
  • Comfort using and/or learning new technology such as A/V equipment and computer software.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in education, higher education administration or counseling, psychology, or related field. 
  • Prior experience working with fraternity and sorority life at the graduate or undergraduate level 
  • Involved regionally or nationally in professional associations within higher education.
  • Previous experience at a rural and/or liberal arts focused institution

*Associate Director level is a possibility for expanded scope of work for candidates with experience.
