Job Description

Job Summary:

Reporting to a head of public services, this position coordinates the library’s instruction programs by collaborating with faculty, staff, and fellow librarians. This librarian assists other librarians with lesson planning and instructional objectives, teaches for assigned subject areas, advises on assessment methods, and brainstorms collaborative strategies. The librarian in this position also coordinates an embedded librarian program, including planning, promoting, and instructing based on a core set of goals and values. An emphasis on information literacy, in tandem with existing course outcomes, is expected. This librarian is also responsible for professional tasks within the reference area, including reference services, collection development for assigned subjects, and the creation of research support guides.

Responsibilities:

  • Works with professors to align library instruction with assignments; advises on lesson planning and implementation for fellow librarians; teaches in assigned subject areas; and seeks new course collaboration opportunities as a teaching and research partner.
  • Creates scaffolded tutorials on research strategies, information sources, and digital literacy skills for in-person and digital use, while working with LibWizard and other content creation tools.
  • Plans and coordinates information literacy assessment models that can be adapted to suit varied course content.
  • Provides quality internal training on digital and in-person information literacy instruction.
  • Instructs and plans lessons for one-shot, embedded, and library-hosted events.
  • Contributes to the policies, quality control, and promotion of instruction, tutorial, and embedded librarian programs.
  • Develops collections in assigned subject fields that could include psychology, counseling, or business, depending on skill set and in partnership with faculty.
  • Assists with library outreach and marketing, as needed, to help the department connect with campus and community members.
  • Staffs the in-person reference desk during some daytime hours, and some nights and weekends.
  • Utilizes a web chat service during scheduled times to provide virtual research support.
  • Creates and maintains electronic research guides, class guides, printed help sheets, and other research tools.
  • Other duties may be assigned as needed.

Faculty Research and Service:

  • Serves as a member of committees in the library and the university.
  • Remains current in the library discipline and assigned liaison areas.
  • Publishes chapters, book reviews, or other peer-reviewed written content for theoretical or practical aspects of the library field.
  • Participates in conferences and professional organizations.
  • Pursues and assists with grants and other funding for special projects and initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education – Master’s degree in Library Science or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience – One year of related experience in providing reference and instruction in a postsecondary academic or adult services library.

Preferred Education/Experience/Skills:

  • Second master’s degree, with a preference for business, psychology, or a related field.
  • Experience with teaching or library instruction.
  • Two years of professional experience in a library, with a preference for academic libraries.

This position is identified as a Campus Security Authority (CSA). A CSA reports non-personally identifying information to the Department of Public Safety related to incidents that fall within the Jeanne Clery Act. Working knowledge of and completion of annual training on the Jeanne Clery Act is required.
