Texas A&M University-San Antonio’s is seeking a Director of University Communications to lead the development, implementation and continued improvement of a comprehensive, dynamic integrated communications strategy to advance institutional priorities. Reporting to the Vice President of University Relations in the recently restructured Division of University Relations, this new role will support the institution’s upcoming strategic plan (“Transforming Tomorrow Together: 2022-2026). The Director will lead a reorganized team responsible for strengthen the institution’s reputation, creating dynamic strategies through high quality, distinctive and results-driven communications campaigns, deliverables and engagement to inform, influence and impact.

The successful candidate will be a passionate and energetic manager, producer, storyteller, writer and editor and versatile communicator – as well as a respected team player, committed to continually improving the university's reputation while amplifying institutional voice. The Director is responsible for leading efforts to develop and refine communication channels responsible for advancing university priorities and strategies to attainment of institutional goals including distinctiveness as an HSI, catalyst for partnerships and initiatives that advance the city, county and region resulting in a stronger voice and national, regional and local positioning. Responsible for the management of the University's comprehensive, multimedia platform for content strategy including news and information, media relations, videography, photography and social media to support an institution-wide integrated communications and digital strategy from development, implementation, management and impact in collaboration with University Marketing and Advancement.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintains a breadth of knowledge about current trends, emerging issues and opportunities in higher education and industry that inform future comprehensive content and communications strategies while being a data-savvy practitioner across diverse platforms.

  • Directs, analyzes and recommends research which may include audience analysis and survey development to constantly monitor and measure communication results to ensure that earned media, social media and content goals are achieved.

  • Manages and refines centralized university communication channels including A&M-SA Today, media relations editorial calendars, executive communications, digital newsletters, monthly and regular briefs, reports, updates supporting the Office of the President.

  • Contributes to setting the vision, strategy and long-term management approach for an integrated marketing and communications and content strategies including developing and maintaining university reputation and identity guidelines and use of resources such as templates, digital monitors and environmental branding.

  • Oversees the planning, creation and implementation of communication strategies to support the various agendas of the University, including admissions and charitable donations

  • Contributes to the management of the division’s annual budget, portfolio of contractors, resources and technology platforms in support of the communication efforts.

  • Supervises the communications production staff including professionals dedicated to media relations, social media content production, writing and editing, photography and videography across a variety of print, broadcast and multi-channel channels (internal and external).

  • Under the direction of the Vice President and integrated working groups, is responsible for advancing the University and building its reputation across a diverse range of audiences.

  • Works closely with faculty, administration and staff, students, and alumni to develop compelling, distinctive and relevant stories to illustrate and advance University.

  • Focused on continuous improvement to lead through institutional scope and capacity needs an integrated marketing unit that provides high quality, distinctive communication campaigns and delivers consistently expectations of the university community with effective expertise, counsel and skills and capacity and ability to effective prioritize competing priorities.

  • Works closely with the Office of the President, Cabinet, Enrollment Management, Academic Affairs, Intercollegiate Athletics, Advancement, Business Affairs and various other departments/divisions to support communication and marketing needs.

  • Constantly seeks to develop the university's communication team of professionals, grow individuals and provide a work place that is rated as outstanding by members of the profession.

  • Contributes and/or leads working groups comprised of members from across the university to successfully and effectively create, implement and assess integrated content and digital strategies, projects and initiatives.

  • Serves a divisional senior representative and emergency and crisis management teams.

  • Develops, produces and provides analysis through customized reports, dashboards and executive summaries through compelling, easy to understand images, factoids, etc.

  • May be required to work beyond normal office hours and weekends.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations or other applicable field.

  • 10 years of related experience.

  • Five years of supervisory experience of communication professionals including social media, video and photography, writer/editors and content producers.

Preferred Experience:

  • Supervisory experience in managing creative and content production teams.

  • Proven record of effective collaboration and leadership capability.

  • Knowledge of marketing research, data capture and analysis, digital media platforms, digital content and media buying.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication across multiple platforms including print, digital, video, and other content-related platforms.

  • Experienced content producer, editor and writer familiar with quality, impactful videography, photography, social media with a focus on outcomes and engagement.

  • Ability to provide recommendations, develop and contribute to sensitive issue management/crisis communications events.

  • Ability to guide and develop advanced executive-level content, writing and multi-media presentations.

  • Knowledge of and experience in higher education environments (academic, administrative).

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others and assign, monitor and recommend staffing and resource allocation including in-source and outsourcing and development and management of contractors including scope of work, project management and successful implementation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated experience in managing multiple tasks, evolving priorities and quick, timely, accurate production deadlines.

  • Must have strong writing and editing skills, be familiar with AP style, and demonstrate proficiency with the Adobe Creative suite and social media.

  • Must work well independently and as a constructive member of a team with the ability to guide and inspire staff in a dynamic, fast-paced entrepreneurial culture while determining and communication priorities and resource use.

  • Must be enthusiastic about promoting higher education in the diverse and inclusive environment.

  • This position must work well with students, faculty and staff at all levels within a diverse, multi-cultural, collaborative environment.
