Assistant/Associate Professor, School of Medicine

The University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine is seeking applicants for an Assistant Professor, tenure track/Associate Professor with tenure for the Black Thriving Initiative (BTI) cluster hire. Through the BTI, UCI aspires to become one of the nation's foremost destinations for Black people to thrive as undergraduates and graduate students, faculty and staff employees, and alumni and communities served by the campus in California, the United States and around the world. For more information about the UCI Black Thriving Initiative, please visit https://inclusion.uci.edu/uci-black-thriving-initiative/.

This position is part of a UCI-wide Environmental Health Disparities faculty cluster hiring program to foster multidisciplinary collaborations that seek to understand and address the ways in which environmental stress and racism contribute to health disparities in Black communities. The cluster includes the Program in Public Health, the Henry Samueli School of Engineering, the School of Social Sciences, and the School of Medicine. In Southern California, we see extreme environmental health disparities in Black communities, including those living near the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, Compton, and downwind of Los Angeles International Airport. The Black Thriving Initiative provides an opportunity to build the foundation for an impactful Center for Environmental Health Disparities Research that will benefit communities locally and regionally with lived Black experiences of environmental injustice. Visit https://sites.uci.edu/cehdr/ to learn more about the Center and the work UCI faculty are doing to address environmental health disparities through community engagement, multidisciplinary research, and research translation.

Qualifications include evidence of extramurally funded research in environmental health disparities and experience working with multidisciplinary teams in community-based participatory research. The successful candidates' research should address how the context of environmental exposures, social, cultural, economic and historical stressors interact to create and promote health inequities. Candidates should have demonstrated experience in assessing environmental exposures, health impacts, and/or intervention opportunities that are directly relevant to Black communities. Of particular interest is research that addresses the individual- and neighborhood-level factors contributing to chronic disease burdens such as cancer. Qualified applicants should have experience teaching, mentoring, and developing educational opportunities designed to promote the success of diverse graduate and undergraduate students. They will serve as faculty in the School of Medicine's Leadership Education to Advance Diversity-African, Black and Caribbean (LEAD-ABC) https://www.meded.uci.edu/curricular-affairs/lead-abc.asp; and mission-based programs https://www.meded.uci.edu/curricular-affairs/about-mission-based-programs.asp. They will be expected to work with additional cluster-hired faculty to seek extramural funding to create a Center focused on environmental health disparities.

This position requires a doctoral degree (e.g., PhD, DrPH, and/or MD), and a strong record of research accomplishments and publications. The home department will be in whichever is most appropriate for the selected candidate.

Criteria for the Ladder Rank Professor Series:

Ladder-Rank Faculty will serve as Research Scholars and educators. They are expected to design and lead significant, thematic research with extramural support when that is needed. Teaching is required and may include clinical, classroom or lab teaching. The incumbent will have a major focus on innovative research of high significance as reflected in sustained, high quality publications and peer-reviewed national funding as a principal investigator.

Application Process:

Applicants should complete an online application profile and upload the following application materials electronically to be considered for this position:

In addition, the 2019 Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education rankings placed UCI 1st for offering an inclusive, supportive learning environment. Compensation is competitive with the nation's finest universities and includes priority access to on-campus for-sale faculty housing. UC Irvine is located four miles from the Pacific Ocean and 45 miles south of Los Angeles. With this commitment as well as a commitment to addressing all forms of academic misconduct, UC Irvine conducts institutional reference checks for candidate finalists to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer of appointment into Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate, and full). The institutional reference checks involve contacting the administration of the applicant's previous institution(s) to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University's Faculty Code of Conduct.

To implement this process, UC Irvine requires all candidates of Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate, and full), to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” into AP RECRUIT as part of their application. If the candidate does not include the signed authorization to release information with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete. As with any incomplete application, the application will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists (i.e., those to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer) considered for Ladder Rank Professor or Professor of Teaching series, at all ranks (i.e., assistant, associate, and full), will be subject to institutional reference checks.
