Position Summary

The Athletic Fields Groundsworker is an important part of the Landscape Services team that helps support San Diego State University’s Athletics Department. This position is a member of the Athletic Fields Grounds Team that maintains the university’s grass and synthetic fields to support our Athletics programs. In this role, the Athletic Fields Groundsworker, under the immediate supervision of the Lead Athletic Fields Groundsworker, performs the full range of grounds keeping duties to maintain the athletic grounds and deliver sports turf management services to the athletic fields on campus and surrounding landscape. These services include but are not limited to the following: hardscape clean-up, sports turf maintenance, landscape bed maintenance and general grounds maintenance work.

The ideal candidate will possess at least two years of experience in sports/athletic field preparation, is knowledgeable in NCAA athletic fields layout and painting techniques and has training/education in sports turf management.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base) benefits eligible, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Work hours are Sunday - Tuesday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Friday - Saturday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

Education and Experience

One year of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or in general grounds maintenance work, or in related manual labor.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years’ experience in a related field (i.e. Athletic Fields, Soil Management, Agronomy)
  • Two years’ sports/athletics field preparation experience
  • Relevant education or coursework in horticulture and/or plant identification
  • Knowledge of NCAA field layouts and painting techniques
  • Experience maintaining athletic fields, preferably at the NCAA Division I or professional sports level
  • Two-year degree with emphasis in sports turf management (or completed coursework in horticulture, sports turf management, turf grass science, or a related field)
  • Sports Turf Manager’s certification
  • Qualified Applicator Certificate/License issued by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation

Specialized Skills

  • One year of experience of athletic field management at NCAA or professional level

Licenses and/or Certifications Required:

  • Valid California Driver’s License or ability to obtain one within 10 days of hire.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $2,945 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $2,945 - $4,950 per month. Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.
