Detailed Description:	
The Assistant Director for Law Student Affairs (Advocacy) reports directly to the Director for Law Student Affairs and is responsible for contributing to a positive student experience by providing continuity and consistency through oversight of student advocacy programs at USD, providing academic advising, and managing accommodations for students. The Assistant Director for Law Student Affairs (Advocacy) works in a collaborative relationship with all law school students, faculty, administrative offices, and university offices. This position manages accommodations and disability services for law students and works faculty to coordinate the mock trial, moot court, VICAM, and all other JD advocacy programs. This position requires occasional attendance at on and off campus events during and outside normal business hours. Some travel may be required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide guidance to and administrative support for the USD Mock Trial Team

In coordination with mock trial faculty, manage all administrative components for USD's Mock Trial Team
Serve as a liaison between guest coaches, judges, and students in Mock Trial.
Coordinate Mock Trial tournament entry, and work with the Coordinator for Law Student Affairs to coordinate travel, lodging, and student reimbursements.
Serve as Mock Trial tournament host/coordinator when needed.
Assist in recruiting Mock Trial team alumni and community members to serve as guest coaches and judges.
Work with students to plan and execute USD-hosted tournaments and events.
Train students on procedures for reimbursements and assist in registration and travel arrangements for events and tournaments.
Oversee budget and expenses.
Provide guidance to and administrative support for the USD Moot Court Team and Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (VICAM) Team

In coordination with the Appellate Moot Court and VICAM boards and their respective Faculty Advisors, direct all administrative components for the USD Moot Court and VICAM advocacy programs.
Regularly meet with students on Moot Court and VICAM boards and the Faculty Advisors to discuss budget and planning for events and competitions.
Guide students on planning and execution of USD-hosted tournaments and events, including McLennon Moot Court Tournament and VICAM Pre-Moot Tournament.
Coordinate tournament entry, and work with the Coordinator for Law Student Affairs to coordinate travel, lodging, and student reimbursements.
Train students on procedures for reimbursements and assist in registration and travel arrangements for events and tournaments.
Guide the Coordinator for Law Student Affairs on the processing of student travel bookings and reimbursements.
Oversee budget and expenses.
Coordinate Accommodations and Disability Services for Law Students

Coordinate all aspects of law school accommodations and disability services for law students.
Meet with and advise law students with documented disabilities as determined by the Disability and Learning Difference Resource Center (DLDRC), as well as students requiring temporary accommodations.
Counsel other students on possible need for accommodations based on referrals from faculty and other administrators.
Manage all aspects of the law school note-taking program including recruiting and supervising law students to provide class notes for law students with documented disabilities; work with Academic Success and Bar Programs Coordinator on logistics.
Be on-call during exam periods to support students with accommodations, and coordinate with staff in other units as necessary, e.g. the Registrar.
Advise students preparing for the bar exam on accommodations procedures and assist with navigating state bar processes.
Develop and maintain accommodations and disability services webpage.
Serve as liaison to the USD DLDRC and meet periodically with office staff.
Research best practices in supporting law students with disabilities and accommodations and recommend improvements in current law school practices to the Assistant Dean for Law Student Affairs.
Provide Academic Advising for JD Students

In conjunction with the Director for Law Student Affairs and Associate Director for Law Student Affairs, advise students on the academic program of the law school and provide individualized advice for student schedules, concentration paths and other academic related questions.
Assist in ensuring the delivery of quality academic advising and support services for new, continuing and visiting students.
Support Director for Law Student Affairs in academic advising and tracking of students subject to Academic Supervision rules. Meet with students on Academic Supervision and ensure they are supported, understand their requirements, and are enrolled in appropriate courses.

Coordinate Additional Advocacy Programs

In coordination with the Director for Law Student Affairs, work with additional advocacy programs including Transactional Law Team, Client Advocacy Team, and all other Student Organization advocacy competition teams

Perform Administrative Duties

Perform administrative duties as necessary including effectively managing event budgets and costs, responding promptly to emails and phone calls, attending and supporting events such as Orientation and Commencement, and attending meetings within the department, law school and university.
Serve as law school point of contact for programming involving minors, keeping up to date on institutional requirements.
Keep up to date on latest trends and practices within advocacy programs and legal education.
Perform other duties or tasks as assigned.

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications:

Graduate degree required. JD degree strongly preferred.
Minimum of two-three years professional experience required. Litigation experience, mock trial or moot court experience preferred.
Experience working in a law school setting is preferred.

Strong computer skills for spreadsheet reporting, word-processing, database maintenance, web-design and maintenance. Minimum of intermediate experience with Word and Excel. Experience with web content development preferred.
