A highly progressive HBCU founded in 1869, Claflin University is a NCAA Division II member sponsoring eleven sports with memberships in the Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association and the Peach Belt Conference. Claflin University partners with the Department of Exercise Science, Arnold School of Public Health’s Post Professional Athletic Training Program at the University of South Carolina.

 

The Head Athletic Trainer reports directly to the Director of Athletics.  The Athletic Trainer shall develop, coordinate, and administer a comprehensive sports medical program for Claflin University intercollegiate athletics to include baseline concussion testing, injury prevention programs, injury evaluations, management, treatment and rehabilitation, and educational programs and counseling for student-athletes.  S/he will also perform professional and administrative services essential for the successful implementation and development of the program.  S/he serves in the prevention, evaluation, and treatment of student-athletic injuries and will participate in professional development seminars and/or conferences to stay abreast of the challenges facing student-athletics.

Responsibilities
  • Provides site supervision of practical experience for part-time athletic trainers from the Advanced Athletic Training Program at the University of South Carolina Department of Exercise Science.
  • Provides athletic training services for the athletic department to include attendance at scheduled team practices and home/away competitions as necessary; and coordinate and schedule physical examinations and medical referrals for student-athletes to determine their ability to practice and compete
  • Acclimates and supervises the assistant/associate athletic trainers, graduate assistant athletic trainers and student athletic trainers.
  • Works with the strength and conditioning staff to ensure safety in the design and implementation of fitness, nutrition, and conditioning programs customized to meet individual student athlete needs.
  • Coordinates the Drug Education and Screening Program.
  • Evaluates and recommends new techniques and equipment to enhance the athletic training program.
  • Develops and manages a recordkeeping system to review, record, process, and maintain confidential medical documentation.
  • Prepares and submits medical reports to appropriate sources.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment and supplies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of the position.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree is required; a Master’s degree preferred.
  • One to five years collegiate athletic training experience preferred.
  • Willing, able, and available to work flexible hours and some weekends and travel and stay overnight in- and/or out of state is required.
  • Valid NATA-BOC certification required.
  • South Carolina Athletic Training Licensure-DHEC required.
  • Demonstration of clinical supervision of athletic training students required.
  • Graduate of CAHEP or CAATE undergraduate athletic training program or NATA approved graduate program required.
  • Valid American Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR/AED certification required.
  • Valid certification in Basic Life Support-DLS required. 
  • Knowledgeable of office practices and procedures required.
  • Knowledgeable of NCAA Division II governing procedures and policies required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, and the public, to disseminate and obtain information required.
  • Effective oral and written communications skills required.
  • Applicant must be a self-starter and able to work in a fast-paced diverse environment with minimum supervision.

 

Special Note:  Claflin University will consult with the NCAA and the enforcement staff to determine if the prospective employee has past NCAA rules violations.  Violations will be reviewed by the Athletic Director and the Office of Compliance for Claflin University to determine eligibility for employment.
