Applications Engineer for Department of Physics, Georgetown College - Georgetown University

The Department of Physics, Georgetown University, is a vibrant community of faculty, students, postdocs, and staff committed to Georgetown's mission as a student-centered research university. Our academic programs feature close student-faculty interactions and include undergraduate majors in physics and biological physics, as well as a novel Industrial Leadership in Physics Ph.D. track for graduate students. Faculty-led research groups are working in areas such as Biological Physics, Hard Condensed Matter, Micro and Nano Technologies, Optics and Imaging, Physics Education, Soft Condensed Matter, Statistical Physics and Ultracold Gases, supported by grants from government agencies such as the National Science Foundation, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and the Department of Energy.

The Applications Engineer, a member of the NIST/GU Professional Research Experience [PREP], performs statistical and computational work that underpins the scientific research of relevant scientific collaborations, potentially including work with physicists, chemists, engineers, and metrologists. They provide application support for the different technical areas that form part of the PREP, and interacts as part of the NIST/GU PREP team.

Jointly supervised and managed by a GU scientist (typically the Georgetown Director of the GU/PREP Program) and a NIST Scientist, the Applications Engineer has key responsibilities that include but are not limited to:
  • Participates in the design and development of statistical software by conducting research to determine analysis requirements and to identify overall user needs and capabilities.
  • Collaborates with diverse research teams involved in scientific applications to document software products and explain software functionality.
  • Participates in the statistical analysis of data in new application areas to identify the potential for new statistical software that would benefit scientists.

  • MS degree in Statistics or a closely related field - e.g., industrial engineering, applied math)
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant experience - with at least one year of experience in the development and use of statistical methods and the development of software for the analysis of physical science data

Preferred qualifications
  • Experience with Bayesian statistical methods, instrument calibration, and experiment design.
  • Experience with development and deployment of web-based software apps
