Job Details

A.T. Still University (ATSU) invites applications for full-time, exempt PA faculty for the Central Coast Physician Assistant (CCPA) Program on the Santa Maria, California campus. Principal PA faculty work as a team member to educate, assess and advise students; to assist the program, school and university in accomplishing their mission, vision and goals; and to provide service to the university, the community, and the profession.

Responsibilities

Faculty responsibilities are varied and will differ to some degree based upon the individual phases of the curriculum.

  • TEACHING:
    • Serves as Instructor or Course Facilitator for small group-based learning curriculum.
    • Prepares syllabi, book lists, and course objectives
    • Curates learning activities
    • Prepares assigned demonstrations using applicable technology for online and classroom teaching
    • Works with staff to make learning material available to students
    • Assumes assigned role in assessment creation, deployment, scoring and analysis
    • Assesses student progress in course, prepare and submit final grades, communicate with students’ faculty advisors
    • Prepares and guide small group-based case studies and other forms of collaborative interactions with colleagues and students in the PA curriculum.
    • Participates in on-campus technical skills boot camp:
      • Instruct and supervise students in assigned clinical skills practice labs
      • Evaluate student performance in clinical simulation examinations
    • Critiques student assignments and provide prompt feedback
    • Assures the availability of, and assist with student tutorial/remediation sessions
    • Travels to CHCs, as assigned, to perform site evaluations, instructional faculty development, and student evaluations
  • ADVISING:
    • Meets with students to:
      • Review student performance
      • Assess student readiness for the next phase of the program
      • Provide opportunity for the student to verbalize his/her progress to date
      • Provide opportunity for the student to clarify/express concerns/verbalize positive aspects of the program and the student’s role in it
    • Meets with any student who has performed unsatisfactorily either academically or professionally
    • Monitors students’ progress
    • Brings to faculty meetings for discussion information on any student considered at risk, needing additional monitoring, or any other form of remediation
    • Maintains complete and up-to-date records on students and student interactions
    • Verifies completeness of permanent file for each advisee within one month of student’s graduation
    • Discusses with Program Chair and Committee on Student Progress any student issues regarding successful progression throughout the Program
  • SERVICE:
    • PA Program:
      • Attends and contributes to faculty, program, and department meetings
      • Participates in Department committees as requested by CCPAP Chair.
      • Participates in the development, revision, and updating of curriculum materials
      • Participates in Program review of mission, goals, values and vision at least annually.
      • Is an active member of the Admissions Committee of the PA Program
      • Participates in Student Progress Boards as requested by Chair
      • Maintain records and do appropriate follow up on all correspondence pertaining to applicants, students, course assignments and preceptors as applicable/assigned
      • Assumes other duties within the Program when needed and feasible.
      • Attends White Coat and Commencement ceremonies for CCPA Program
      • Attends the CCPA Program annual retreat to participate in CCPA Program evaluation and revision, as needed
      • Maintains, through self-study, CME and other activities, current knowledge of the PA profession, and area of teaching responsibility
      • Constantly strives to discover, and keep abreast of, educational tropics and innovative methods related to PA education
    • College:
      • Serves as elected or appointed representative in CHC committees/activities as needed
      • Assumes other duties within the CHC when requested by Dean and approved by Chair
    • University:
      • Serves as elected or appointed representative in ATSU committees/activities as needed
      • Assumes other duties within ATSU when approved by Chair
    • Profession:
      • Maintains visibility in respective professional and community organizations.
      • Attends National, Regional, and/or State activities representing University, Program, and Profession.
  • SCHOLARLY ACTIVITY:
    • Engages in scholarly activity and service.
    • Assumes responsibilities in grant related projects as assigned
Skills/Requirements
  • College plus postgraduate studies: Healthcare or Science degree in Primary care medicine and/or how science field applied in primary care medicine.
  • Two to three years' prior experience in field of study of healthcare.
  • Prior teaching experience at undergraduate or graduate level, preferred.
  • Knowledge of, or interest in learning, non-lecture-based curriculum delivery, such as case-based or problem-based learning.
  • Basic computer skills with Google Suites and/or Microsoft Office.

  • Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills.

  • Ability to work cooperatively in small groups of fellow faculty and with students.
  • Strong interest in the recruitment and education of diverse PAs to focus on the care of the underserved.

The ideal candidate will live local to Santa Maria, CA, or be willing to relocate. They will have demonstrated proof of commitment to the CCPA Mission: "The Central Coast Physician Assistant (CCPA) program educates culturally-humble, diverse physician assistants (PAs) to serve the primary care needs of medically underserved communities." They will have demonstrated a strong interest, and have experience in, medical education, interpersonal communication, and evidence- based innovation. They will be a strong team player, willing to be flexible in their duties to accomplish goals as the demands require.
