The Department of Language Studies at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Computational Linguistics. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an expected start date of July 1, 2022, or shortly thereafter.

Candidates must have earned a PhD degree in Linguistics, Computer Science, Psychology, Cognitive Science, or a relevant area, with a focus on computational linguistics or a related area by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching.

We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths in theoretical linguistics, psycholinguistics, and Indigenous language revitalization. The ideal candidate will have formal training in linguistics.

Candidates’ research must have a strong focus on applying computational methods to questions in linguistic research (language structure, processing, acquisition). Connections with Natural Language Processing/speech technology will be considered an asset.

The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. The successful candidate will also be expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching, and to contribute to curriculum development of undergraduate courses in computational linguistics. The candidate will have an appointment in the Tri-campus graduate department in Linguistics and will teach and supervise graduate students in that department. The possibility of cross-appointment in Computer Science can also be explored.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier (with required materials outlined below) submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference.

Candidates must also show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment demonstrated through the application materials.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
