The Department of Anthropology in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in Biocultural Medical Anthropology. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an expected start date of July 1, 2022.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Anthropology or a related area by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek a scholar with expertise in Biocultural or Biological Medical Anthropology. Candidates will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.

We seek a scholar whose research engages with health inequities and their socio-environmental context in living human populations using theory and methods from a biocultural approach. Candidates must have expertise in biocultural approaches to analyzing the biological and health impacts of poverty, economic precarity, colonialism/settler colonialism, racism, ethnic discrimination or marginalization, or historical/intergenerational trauma. Candidates must demonstrate a research focus on maternal/reproductive health, child health and development, or food sovereignty and nutrition. Regional focus is open.

We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance existing faculty strengths in the St. George Department of Anthropology and in the tri-campus University of Toronto Anthropology Graduate Program. The successful applicant will be expected to pursue excellence in teaching in the St. George Anthropology undergraduate program (https://www.anthropology.utoronto.ca/), and to participate actively in the tri-campus University of Toronto Anthropology Graduate Program (http://www.anthropology.utoronto.ca/graduate/).

The successful candidate will be expected to make a significant contribution to our undergraduate programs in medical anthropology and to successfully supervise and mentor graduate students studying medical anthropology from a biocultural and/or biological anthropology perspective.

Excellence in research will be demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field-relevant academic journals, or forthcoming publications, meeting high international standards; the submitted research statement; presentations at significant disciplinary conferences; grants, accolades or awards as appropriate for stage of career; and strong endorsements by referees of high stature. Demonstrated significant impact of community-collaborative work through the development and implementation of social justice and equity initiatives as demonstrated in the application materials, will also be considered as evidence of research excellence.

Evidence for excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching awards and accomplishments as appropriate for stage of career; strong letters of reference; and the teaching dossier including a teaching statement, sample course materials, and teaching evaluations, as well as strong letters of reference.

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
