We are looking for an Assistant Director for Partnerships will work closely with the Executive Director and will be responsible for the development and stewardship of current and new Scott Institute partnerships and initiatives. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. You will contribute to the department by providing essential support by engaging with partners to activate the CMU network of talented faculty, staff, students, and alumni with key regional, national and global collaborators in industry and government.  Creating conditions that promote interactions to build connections and strengthen interdisciplinary encounters in energy. Providing pathways for organizations seeking to work in partnership with CMU to connect with the university in the areas of energy and cleantech and moving Scott Institute initiatives forward.


Core responsibilities include:

 

Develop and foster the Scott Institute’s network of partners including program management

 

  • Provide stewardship and oversight of existing relationships with industry, nonprofits, government agencies, start-ups, other universities, and other funded projects.

     

  • Help to develop key initiative and platforms:

     

  • Facilitate the activities of the University Energy Institute Collaborative. Manage aspects of relationships with ongoing funded projects from industry and government including DOE and NREL.

     

  • Meet with partners and relevant colleagues to build program strategy, budget and elements, and report on progress.

     

  • Develop effective and coordinated program communications including briefing documents, update deliverables, etc. Prepare and provide regularly scheduled reports.

     

  • Oversee the CMU Energy Investor Forum and Advisory Showcase, student Energy Hackathon, and/or Student Poster Competition.

     

  • Provide business case mentoring to energy and cleantech start-ups.

     

  • Research and develop strategies for the engagement with partners that are aligned with the research and outreach activities of Scott Institute Faculty Affiliates and CMU goals.

     

  • Create opportunities for increased visibility to aid in funded research and partnerships, including execution of pilot projects.

     

  • Engage with the Scott Institute staff to organize campus visits from government, industry, non-profit organizations, start-ups, investors, and visiting faculty from other universities.

     

  • Match partner research projects with faculty interests.

     

  • With the Executive Director, contribute to annual schedule of faculty sessions, seminars, distinguished lectures, tech talks, briefings, networking events, roundtables and workshops, corporate recruiting gatherings for external organizations, evening receptions, and poster sessions, among other events, with support from the Scott Institute team.

     

  • Conduct outreach to partners to identify other potential areas for collaboration.

     

  • Serve in a lead role to support and manage CMU Energy Week activities. 

     

  • Provide proposal development support including drafting non-technical sections, review and consolidation, editing and formatting.

     

  • Manage relevant information from engagements in CRM systems, including but not limited to Excel, Salesforce and Zoho databases, and generate reporting.

     

  • Track budgets and provide forecasting for projects; generate reporting.

     

Grow the Scott Institute partner relationships and offering

 

  • Help with policy outreach efforts, including to government agencies and decision makers.

     

  • Assist with budgeting and tracking of financials (working with a Business Manager).

     

  • Support engagements with specific start-up activities in energy, solar and cleantech, including timelines and deliverables. Helps to pursue follow-on funding.

     

  • Contribute to proposals in partnership with the team, as opportunities arise.

     

  • Document, develop, implement and communicate benefits (working with the Scott Institute team), and conduct outreach to faculty and students.

     

  • Help to mentor and/or manage interns and other staff, as needed.

     

  • Serve as a liaison support to other university departments, including other centers and institutes as well as the energy, science, technology and policy (EST&P) master’s program. Represent Scott Institute at various internal and external meetings.

     

  • Act as a resource to Scott Institute team for onboarding and training, and as resource to colleagues in relevant areas.

  • Problem solving and reasoning skills, analytical skills, and strong verbal and written interpersonal communication skills.

     

  • A proactive, positive attitude and the ability to work independently.

     

  • Ability to travel outside the Pittsburgh region and a willingness to work outside normal business hours.

     

Qualifications:

 

  • At least 5 years of work experience with undergraduate degree or equivalent or master’s in an aligned field of study.

     

  • Working knowledge of energy, renewables, cleantech, sustainability, and/or aligned field of expertise.

     

  • Demonstrated experience in partner engagement and relationship management.

     

  • Microsoft Office suite – Word, Excel, Powerpoint. Database management.

     

  • Data visualization a plus.
