Job Description

The UX/UI team supports EIS development projects and works collaboratively with clients, users, and web application developers to plan, design, evaluate, and refine user interfaces for the university’s enterprise-level systems, including the Learning Management System (LMS), Student Information System (SIS), Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system, Enterprise Service Management System, portal, and custom web applications.

Reporting to the Director of Enterprise Information Services (EIS), the UX/UI Manager includes the following responsibilities:

  • Manage team members, coordinate priorities and develop plans related to the design, development, programming, testing, implementation, and user support of applications by designing web interfaces that adhere to standards and styles set within the design group and University Marketing.
  • Develop and master appropriate technologies to design, program and manage web-based applications and processes for maintenance of public web sites, administrative intranet systems, and content management systems (CMS) to support prospecting communication, registration management, expense tracking, reporting and other projects.
  • Provide technical expertise to the design team as needed by individual members, as well as coordinate the team moving forward to new global architecture with new development paradigms, platforms, and frameworks to keep in synch with the industry.
  • Conduct user-centered interviews with students, faculty, staff, and administrators to identify the contexts, purposes, environments, assumptions, expectations, roles, tasks, actions, functions, relationships, and communication channels important to the work that is being accomplished.
  • Participate with management in planning to accommodate growth and new technologies relevant to the success of this area.
  • Other related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field; AND,
  • 2-4 years of programming experience; AND,
  • 1-2 year of management or supervisory experience; OR,
  • Any equivalent combination of experience, training, and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Five or more years of experience working in higher education.
  • Five or more years of experience collaborating with software developers and cross-functional teams.
  • Five or more years of project management experience.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate diplomatically and persuasively with diverse technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Excellent supervisory, organizational, and training skills.
  • Ability to elicit relevant information from all stakeholders by observing, asking insightful questions, and transforming the responses into design recommendations and prototypes of effective and satisfying application interfaces. Ability to accurately define problems, propose creative solutions, and simplify complex information. Project management skills and familiarity with software development processes and life cycles.
  • Knowledge of user-interface guidelines, best practices, and sources of information on UX/UI research findings.
  • Visual design skills, including grid system layouts, web typography, color palettes, company branding, and image production for use on responsive sites and mobile devices.
  • Ability to use wireframing, prototyping, and design tools (for example, OmniGraffle, Lucidchart, Balsamiq, or Axure; Illustrator, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, HTML, CSS).
  • Knowledge of Section 508 requirements and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
  • Familiarity with university enterprise-level systems, such as learning management systems (LMS), student information systems (SIS), customer relationship management systems (CRM), and enterprise service management systems.
  • Ability to use office productivity applications (for example, MS Office, Google Apps for Education).
  • Ability to work with people from a variety of different culturally diverse backgrounds.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting.

Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States.

Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.

Salary

$95,809 - $119,761

Commensurate with experience.

**The starting salary will be determined by the qualifications of the selected applicant balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.


FLSA Status

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.


Benefits

This is a Service Professional (SPF) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System or the Optional Retirement Program; 22 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. Service Professionals are hired on a contract basis, renewable each 6 months according to terms of the Conditions of Professional Service.

Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. If a new employee chooses the ASRS retirement option, participation in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, will begin on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP), which is an alternative to the ASRS plan for faculty and other appointed staff, will begin to participate on the first day of employment. Additionally, the long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of employment.
