West Valley-Mission Community College District

Closing Date: 10/11/2021

Definition:
WE ARE MISSION
Mission College, one of two colleges in the West Valley-Mission Community College District, was founded in 1976 and moved to its current location in 1979, North of Highway 101 in Santa Clara, right next to Great America and Levi's Stadium. Thanks to three bond measures and community support over the past 20 years, the campus has transformed itself. Gone is the College's first Main Building, replaced by a central plaza, Viso Student Engagement Center, and Gillmor Center. Also included in the Master Plan is a new technology building, theatre and community space, and STEM Center. The bonds have also improved the library, Freeberg Hospitality Building, refurbished athletics fields, and built the Viso Sports and Kinesiology Complex. Mission College enrolls 7,500 students per year and has a diverse student body. It is one of a just a few colleges in the country to simultaneously receive federally-funded Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and Asian-American, Native American, Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI) grants. Its programs cater to Silicon Valley, with degrees in computer science, engineering, business, and accounting. Its hospitality program trains regional chefs who start their own restaurants, most notably in Seattle and Las Vegas; and the College also trains future firefighters, EMTs, and nurses that save lives from Kaiser to the foothills of California. The College also has strong partnerships with the Santa Clara Unified School District, Second Harvest Foodbank, and other area businesses. Its partnership with Year Up is in its second cohort, and includes a paid internship at elite Silicon Valley companies. With a focus on equity and a student-first mentality, the College has developed an Equity Framework and built an equity walk on campus. It established community programs such as Puente and Umoja. Realizing a need for students during the pandemic, the College adopted a laptop and Wi-Fi loan program and gave out emergency assistance. It also expanded its partnership with Second Harvest Foodbank. It also has programs for low-income students with programs such as EOPS, TRIO, and CalWORKs. Its women's basketball and baseball teams are regular participants in the post season and its Mission Dance Company, Mission College Chorus and Mission College Symphony perform for the community. It also hosts regular showings of regional artists and its own students at its Vargas Art Gallery. The College's accreditation was reaffirmed by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges in 2020. THE DISTRICTSilicon Valley is a world-renowned center for high technology and an important business and financial center. It is also the Bay Area's most populous county, with almost 2 million residents, and the site of California's third-largest city, San Jose. West Valley and Mission Colleges serve an area of approximately 350,000 residents. The West Valley-Mission Community College District is one of the largest employers in Santa Clara County. The Colleges are actively involved in corporate training, economic development, community education, and partnerships with community agencies and businesses on and off-campus. Grant development and foundations provide innovative fundraising and financial support to the colleges.
