SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Director, the LGBTQ+ Program Coordinator takes a leadership role in the planning, development, implementation, and supervision of all services for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer+ (LGBTQ+) students. The LGBTQ+ Program Coordinator assists the Director in cross-divisional efforts to boost an inclusive, welcoming, and equitable community. The LGBTQ+ Coordinator assists the Director in creating an office of Multicultural Student Programs that will serve as a resource of first-choice for LGBTQ+ students; assists the Director to support and manage campus-wide programmatic initiatives to cultivate a community of inclusivity, pursuing specific goals and objectives to further the University’s commitment to social justice and equity; builds a robust student experience for LGBTQ+ students, as well as the entire student body with an emphasis on building a safe campus and a sense of belonging. The LGBTQ+ Coordinator assists the Director to ensure that co-curricular and extracurricular activities align with the mission, vision, and core values of Gallaudet. The LGBTQ+ Coordinator works with the Director to actively contribute to the University’s and DEDI’s strategic efforts to promote the engagement, persistence, and retention of LGBTQ+ students. The LGBTQ+ Coordinator is compassionate and understanding yet holds students to a high standard and is committed to the success of each student.


PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Service to LGBTQ+ students

I. Leads the team to coordinate programs that support the institutional retention efforts in partnership with LGBTQ+ students, LGBTQ+ communities, and allied students and organizations.

II. Leads the team to develop supportive, mentoring relationships for individual students, meeting regularly with leaders of LGBTQ+ student organizations to provide support, leadership development and opportunities, and training and programming assistance.

III. Promotes the recruitment and retention of LGBTQ+ students for leadership of campus student organizations by showcasing student academic, scholarly, social, and civic achievements in marketing and promotional materials.

IV. Serves as advisor, mentor, and advocate for recognized LGBTQ+ student organizations.

V. Provides support to LGBTQ+ students which includes information and resources, educational programming, retention, accommodations, and leadership opportunities.

VI. Supports LGBTQ+ students experiencing academic or personal difficulties and assists them in connecting to university resources.

VII. Attends and is visible and presents in events and programs on campus that are relevant to the LGBTQ+ community.

Service to Campus and Community

VIII. Serves as a resource for the university community on best practices, national trends, and campus community needs in the areas of identity development, access and inclusion, intercultural issues, diversity and social justice.

IX. Partners with campus leaders to create an environment that meaningfully and thoughtfully fosters a diverse learning and living environment on campus, and prepares students to live in a diverse world.

X. Facilitates training and programs to build cultural competency.

XI. Develops and maintains effective working relationships with community support organizations and leaders from LGBTQ+ communities by networking and developing new relationships.

XII. Represents the University at off-campus events for the purposes of recruiting, marketing, and educating.

Operational Responsibilities

XIII. Works within the department budget to facilitate a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds and maintains an ongoing working knowledge of the meaning of the terms within the various LGBTQ+ communities.

XIV. Conducts research projects, such as surveys, petitions and focus groups in order to gather student concerns and interests, and represent those interests to administration; and assesses efforts for Multicultural programs and services to ensure the programs are effectively serving students and promoting student success with emphasis on helping close the achievement gaps of LGBTQ+ students.

XV. Assists the Director in assessing programs, services, learning outcomes, and initiatives to measure effectiveness to ensure support of students of color, LGBTQ+ students, first generation students, and other students with diverse backgrounds with a focus on the student experience, retention, and graduation.

XVI. Coordinates the hiring and training of Multicultural Student Programs student paraprofessionals; and supervises and mentors them with the goal of increasing their personal and professional growth; and supervises and supports student paraprofessionals in the development, implementation, and marketing of innovative social, cultural, recreational, and educational programming for all students to maximize involvement and interaction with the campus and community, with the goal of increasing student engagement.

XVII. Keeps the campus community informed of all events, programs, and activities through print, visual and social media; ensures the timely distribution of messages for the campus community and develops a campus-wide events calendar for the community.

XVIII. Participates in state, regional and national professional associations to remain connected to best practices in the field.

XIX. Coordinates and assists with the preparation of proposals, plans and applications for funding of programs.

XX. Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisor.

XXI. Shows a genuine commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace; and participates in activities and workshops to foster continuous learning.

XXII. Serves as a mandatory Title IX and Bias Incident reporter; and takes annual Title IX and Bias Incident training as part of the compliance requirements.

XXIII. Performs other duties commensurate with the role and responsibilities of the position.


SPECIFICATIONS:

Required Qualifications (When the candidate’s resume meets these qualifications, it will be screened in.):

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • A minimum of three years of professional experience in leadership development, student activities, advising, student organizational support and program planning.
  • Fluency in American Sign Language.

Preferred Qualifications (While not required, it is an advantage for what the position needs.):

  • Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in student personnel, psychology, social work, education, human behavior or a related field.
  • Experience in coordinating or planning events/activities.
  • Experience collaborating and supporting diverse communities.
  • Experience working with student groups.

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to communicate complex issues with clarity.

  • Strong organizational and project management skills, and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.

  • Enthusiasm for and demonstrated commitment to supporting a student body that is broadly diverse with regard to gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender identity, and religion among other factors.

The successful candidate must have flexibility in working during evenings and weekends.

Level: 8
Salary: Commensurate with experience and qualifications
