Senior Director of Development, Georgetown University Medical Center Office of Advancement

Senior Director of Development, Georgetown University Medical Center - Office of Advancement

The Senior Director of Development is responsible for the planning, implementation, and management of a comprehensive, proactive development program, with emphasis on leadership and major gifts, to help assure the research programs at Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC) have access to a multitude of cutting edge shared resources. In consultation with the Dean of Research and the Senior Associate Vice President of Advancement for GUMC, they design, manage, and execute all fund raising activity for the research enterprise at GUMC; maintain a portfolio of individual, corporate and foundation, major, principal and transformative gift prospects; and coordinate and collaborate with MedStar Health on issues related to grateful patients and related fundraising efforts. As an integral member of both the senior development team within the Office of Advancement and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital (MGUH) senior staff, the Senior Director helps to ensure the continued growth of GUMC's existing programs, and the development of initiatives that represent its vision and direction for the future; and works in partnership with MGUH on fundraising priorities for the campaign for health and medicine. Reporting to the Senior Associate Vice President of Advancement for GUMC, and leading a four-member team, the Senior Director of Development has duties that include but are not limited to:

Portfolio Management - Cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major and P&T gift prospects for GUMC and the joint campaign for MedStar Health
  • Oversee the GUMC Research development team of four, responsible for raising $5-7 million per year in cash and/or pledges; and take individually responsibility for raising $2-3M per year in cash and/or pledges
  • Manage a portfolio of at least 50 active, major gift prospects with a rated capacity of $100,000 or more, including grateful patients
  • Support strategy and solicitation of P&T donors for GUMC and MedStar Health
  • Make 90-110 visits annually (approximately 9-10 visits per month) to prospects in accordance with prospect management system and design solicitation strategies
  • Develop and execute moves plan for assigned prospects
  • Develop and implement stewardship plan for portfolio
  • Recruit and manage volunteer groups who serve GUMC Research
  • Manage volunteer solicitations


Administration and leadership for GUMC Research Team
  • Serve as a senior member of GUMC Advancement's Leadership Team
  • Manage four direct reports with a growing team during this campaign
  • Provide direct and indirect management, supervision and oversight; and ensure engagement and retention of the GUMC Research development team through regular growth, development and career pathing conversations and strategies
  • Effectively manage and motivate, foster career growth and development, write and complete performance reviews for direct reports
  • Navigate and overcome any obstacles to process and fundraising efforts
  • Ensure that GUMC Research fundraising goals are met
  • Manage and evaluate GUMC Research staff - project timelines and deadlines, staff moves, management, proposal and solicitation review, and follow up on staff assignments
  • Administer program-specific planning, action and strategy reports, and correspondence
  • Administer basic computer systems and GU360 compliance
  • Administer the GUMC Research team's development budget, and other University and Office of Advancement administrative tasks as assigned
  • Lead Communications/Programs/Events for GUMC Research - lead strategic development of marketing strategies and campaign materials; and develop focused events and communications materials for creating prospect awareness, advancing cultivation, and improving stewardship efforts, and work with volunteers as appropriate


Development of strategies and research for outreach to prospects
  • Identify and research new donors/funding sources, including grateful patients
  • Expand fundraising program for all forms of philanthropic support
  • Prepare briefings for GUMC and University leadership


Collaboration with University, Medical Center and Advancement leadership and faculty
  • Prepare reports, briefings and talking points for strategic fundraising and to educate donors and achieve fundraising goals
  • Staff academic leaders and key volunteers at events and meetings


Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required - Master's degree preferred
  • At least 9 years of major gift fundraising experience, including major and principal gifts - preferably in a medical/ health care environment
  • Leadership experience, including staff supervision
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work with a diverse range of constituents, including donors, board members and volunteers, as well as alumni, parents, friends, faculty, administrators and internal colleagues
  • Demonstrated track record of success in meeting major gift and campaign goals
  • Strong prioritization and organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to meet and manage multiple deadlines simultaneously
  • Ability to act with diplomacy and confidentiality in engagement with constituents
  • Demonstrated initiative and flexibility
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft applications
