Nature of Work

The Colorado School of Public Health (ColoradoSPH) has an opening for a full-time position at the rank of Postdoctoral Fellow.

 

The selected candidate will be part of the Medical Image Phenotyping (MIP) lab within the Department of Biostatistics and Informatics (BIOS) at the ColoradoSPH. The lab was created as a collaboration between the BIOS and the Children’s Hospital Colorado (CHCO), and it has members, dedicated space and resources in both institutions.

 

BIOS brings together biostatisticians, data scientists and computer scientists to create data analysis methods and tools to find answers to public health problems. The CHCO is the only children’s hospital in Colorado and 12 surrounding states ranked in the top 10 children’s hospitals by the US News and World Report in 2020-2021 (ranked #6). The hospital is affiliated to the University of Colorado School of Medicine (SOM) and dedicated $120 million to research only in 2018.

 

The ColoradoSPH is a collaborative endeavor involving the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus (CU Anschutz), Colorado State University (CSU), and the University of Northern Colorado (UNC). The Colorado School of Public Health is the first and only accredited school of public health in the Rocky Mountain Region, attracting top tier faculty and students from across the country, and providing vital contributions towards ensuring our region’s health and wellbeing. Collaboratively formed in 2008 by CU Denver, CSU and UNC, the Colorado School of Public Health provides training, innovative research and community service to actively address public health issues including chronic disease, access to healthcare, environmental threats, emerging infectious diseases, and costly injuries.

 

CU Anschutz is the only comprehensive academic health sciences center in Colorado, the largest academic health center in the Rocky Mountain region and one of the newest education, research and patient care facilities in the world. Currently home to 25,000 employees, more than 5,000 degree-seeking students and two nationally recognized hospitals that handle 1.7 million patient visits each year, CU Anschutz trains the health sciences workforce of the future, carries out a broad range of research, and cares for the state’s children, adults, and veterans. CU Anschutz features schools of medicine, pharmacy, dental medicine and public health, a college of nursing and a graduate school.

 

The selected candidate will work primarily on a NIH-funded project that aims to quantitatively characterize head development in healthy children and children with cranial pathology using large medical image datasets. The outcomes of this project will improve pediatric healthcare directly and will establish the necessary scientific basis to better understand how pathology and genetic factors affect cranial development.

 

The incumbent will be responsible for writing research manuscripts presenting novel methods in the fields of medical image computing and machine learning, will help with the supervision of graduate students and will maintain a fluent communication with our clinical partners. The incumbent will also participate and receive training in grant proposal writing. The MIP lab is committed to support the career growth of the candidate.

The candidate will be supervised directly by Dr. Antonio Porras, Assistant Professor in the Department of Biostatistics and Informatics.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Creation of novel image analysis and machine learning algorithms resulting in peer-reviewed publications

  • Coordination with clinical collaborators

  • Contribution to lab activities and growth (e.g. present at lab/department meetings, coordinate dataset organization, identify/pursue new projects or collaborations, etc.)

  • Help with the supervision of graduate students

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience with the development of image processing, machine learning and/or statistical modeling methods applied to the analysis of medical images

  • Coding: proficiency in Python and C++ programming languages

  • Image processing libraries: experience with ITK, simpleITK and/or VTK

  • Deep learning: knowledge of Pytorch, Tensorflow or similar

  • Salary and Benefits

    The initial salary range for this position has been established at $54,000 to $59,000.

    The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

    The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

    Qualifications
    Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD in the fields of Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or equivalent
  • At least 3 peer-reviewed publications (including submitted journal papers under review) as first author in the field of medical image computing.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in the development of novel methods for image segmentation or image registration
  • Experience in the development of novel anatomical statistical modeling methods
  • Experience in the development of machine/deep learning methods to evaluate disease phenotypes from medical images
  • Proactivity and excellent communication skills (oral and written)
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member within a research environment
