The Position:
Applications are now being accepted for the position of Dean, School of Mathematics, Sciences and Nursing Education at San Diego City College beginning January 2022. One of three colleges in the San Diego Community College District, City College is an urban campus dedicated to the precepts of Social Justice, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. City College provides academic and vocational offerings to meet the needs of a diverse student population. The college is minutes away from the world-class San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, and Chicano Park. While the current vacancy is at City College, applicants should understand that they are subject to assignment at any District facility at the option of the Chancellor. Under the direction of a Vice President of Instruction/Student Services or other assigned manager, plan, organize and direct a major instructional, instructional support or student services program on a college campus or at a large continuing education site.
  • Incumbents in this classification are assigned to manage and provide leadership to a large instructional program involving a group of academic subject areas, instructional support or a student services program employing certificated personnel such as academic support services. Dean positions supervise certificated (faculty and Associate Deans) and classified professionals directly or through first-line supervisors.
  • Plan, organize, coordinate, manage and evaluate an assigned instructional or instructional support program in accordance with legal requirements, district policies, and sound instructional/guidance principles and practices.
  • Establish overall objectives and plans; initiate and participate in overall program planning; assess needs for programs/services; facilitate their development and implementation in accordance with established approval guidelines and budgets.
  • Demonstrated commitment to principles of Diversity, Equity, Social Justice, and Inclusion, which serves to support the college mission, and values thus promoting student and employee equity, achievement, and success.


Major Responsibilities:
  • Prepare faculty, supervisors and classified professionals’ assignments and schedules; implement effective enrollment management strategies to promote required/desired course and program productivity metrics in accordance with established college and district protocols.
  • Direct the evaluation of facilities and equipment, maintain the health and safety standards and protocols (such as those established by Cal OSHA and district risk management), and implement recommended improvements to procedures and protocols.
  • Communicate and interpret program objectives and offerings to potential and current students, two-year and four-year institutions, community organizations, classified professionals, faculty or others.
  • Screen, interview, select, assign, supervise, and evaluate faculty and classified professionals.
  • Develop continual budget recommendations according to established procedures; monitor and control assigned program budgets; provide program grant proposal and management.
  • Serve as a committee or taskforce member at district, college, continuing education sites or region.
  • Maintain liaison with district or district sites administration to assure proper coordination of activities.
  • Represent the District and participate at the local, State and national levels in organizations and activities that improve, promote and publicize District instructional/instructional support programs.
  • Prepare reports and make presentations as necessary; assure the preparation, distribution, communication and maintenance of required reports, records and files.
  • Coordinate and facilitate the resolution of student, instructor and staff conflicts, complaints and grievances.
  • Understand and contribute to a college participatory governance structure and collective bargaining environment.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.


Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
In compliance with policies adopted by the Board of Trustees, applicants for
this position must show evidence of the following minimum qualifications:
1. Possession of a Master’s degree from a regionally accredited
institution; AND,
2. One (1) year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience
reasonably related to the administrator’s assignment.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Demonstrates cultural competency, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff.
  • Knowledge of the disciplines included in the School of Mathematics, Sciences, and Nursing Education.
  • Demonstrated teaching experience, work experience, and/or leadership experience in STEM disciplines.
  • Evidence of strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability/experience in planning, organizing, evaluating, and implementing projects working with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Current knowledge and/or experience in educational technology.
  • Knowledge of the curriculum process at an educational institution.
  • Evidence of successful management ability, effective interpersonal skills and leadership ability necessary to provide innovative directions to the school’s programs.
  • Knowledge and experience with the content and critical issues facing a multi-discipline STEM-focused academic unit, including career technical fields.
  • Demonstrate ability to collaborate with colleagues in instructional, student, and administrative/business services for the development of programs and services that promote the success of the College’s diverse student body.
  • Experience and/or knowledge in working with students of great diversity in socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background, including those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities.


Licenses:
Training and Experience: Any combination of training and experience equivalent to: qualification for a California Community College Supervisor Credential and three years of increasingly responsible and directly related management or supervisory experience in an institution of higher education.

Both of the following: (a) Master’s degree or Doctorate degree; AND (b) One year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrator’s administrative assignment.

Valid California driver’s license California Community College Supervisory Credential.

Pay Information:
Range 18 ($9,033.99 - $14,485.37) per month based on the current Management Salary Schedule.

Initial salary placement is commensurate with related experience and promotional rules. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid: medical, dental, and vision plans; sick and vacation leave; and opportunities for professional development. Initial Salary Placement, Promoted or transferred employees will be placed as specified in the Management Employees Handbook. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. A temporary probationary period will be applied to the employee entering this assignment.
