Job Summary
Columbus State University has an opening for a Police Lieutenant in the University Police Department. This position is responsible for the daily management, and limited administrative work in planning, assigning, and supervisory oversight of any assigned division within the police department. This position is considered administrative in nature and the typical work is sedentary with office hours of 8 to 5 with an hour of lunch, Monday through Friday. However, the Lieutenant may be called on for protection of life and property and enforcing the laws of the state of Georgia. As such the Lieutenant should be prepared to assist or support the patrol functions of the agency at a moment's notice.

Responsibilities
Responsibilities include but are not limited to assigning tasks, analyzing and evaluating reports, investigating cases, and participating in officer training programs. Work includes the responsibility for making decisions regarding actions to be taken and exercising independent judgment in the application of laws and ordinances. Supervision is exercised through subordinate supervisors over all employees of the assigned operation. Work is performed independently within established laws, policies, and regulations and is reviewed through conferences and reports. Other significant duties include: planning, assigning, supervising, managing, and participating in the programs and activities within the assigned division; developing staffing plans; studying crime and other reports to determine trends and making recommendations for changes in-organization and operating procedures to obtain the most effective results; preparing and maintaining necessary records and reports; reviewing and approving daily reports generated by the assigned division; acting as Hiring Manager for vacant positions within each division; and performing related work as required.

Required Qualifications
Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in criminal justice or a related field; or at least 10 years of law enforcement experience with 5 or more years in a supervisory capacity and 5 or more years of experience in a college or university setting; must be eligible for the Georgia Peace Officer Basic Law Enforcement Certification by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council or be able to attain this certification within one year of employment as Defined by O.C.G.A. 35-8-8; and must have a valid driver's license. The selected candidate should have good physical health, 20/20 vision or vision correctable to 20/20, ability to hear and speak clearly, walk, run, jump and lift 50 pounds. Ability to use a firearm safely and accurately is crucial. A professional appearance of applicant is required .

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred qualifications include:
  • Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council certified instructor
  • Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council supervision certificate
  • Specialized training related to management or leadership such as Command College or Georgia Peace Officer Management Certification

Proposed Salary
The annualized salary range for this position is $48,723 - $53,000 and includes full benefits.

Columbus State University Police Officer Selection Process:

The selection process for police officers is intended to identify those candidates that are best suited for a rewarding and challenging career in law enforcement. The mission of the Columbus State University Police Department is in part to safeguard the life, liberty and property of all people who may come into contact with the agency. The hiring process helps ensure that the selected candidate best reflects the core values of the Columbus State University Police Department. Each candidate for the position of police officer will be required to submit to the following steps:

1. Initial application submission using the Columbus State University's online employment site.
2. Interview with command staff.
3. Personal History Booklet completed.
4. Background investigation to include a fingerprint check through FBI and GBI.
5. Computer Voice Stress Examination (information provided from application and PHB).
6. Interview with Chief of Police.
7. Conditional offer of employment.
8. Pre-employment physical, pre-employment drug screen and pre-employment psychological.
9. Probationary appointment for six months following basic mandate certification.
