POSITION DETAILS

For over 15 years, the CUNY School of Professional Studies (CUNY SPS) has been leading online education in New York. Notable for offering the most online bachelor’s and master’s degree options at the City University of New York, and for serving transfer students as the University system’s only undergraduate all-transfer college, CUNY SPS meets the needs of adults who wish to finish a bachelor’s degree, progress from an associate’s degree, earn a master’s degree or certificate in a specialized field, and advance in the workplace or change careers.

The School’s growth has been remarkable, with twenty-four degrees launched since 2006. Enrollment has risen by more than 30% in the last four years to over 4,000 students in the credit-bearing programs. Thousands more are enrolled in non-degree and grant-funded workplace learning programs. In addition, the School has an active alumni network and has established the CUNY SPS Foundation, which offers multiple scholarship opportunities to current students.

CUNY SPS has consistently been named by U.S. News & World Report as one of the country’s top online institutions. This year, the School was ranked in the top 2% in the nation on the publisher’s list of the 2021 Best Online Bachelor’s Degree Programs.

As a member of the senior leadership team reporting directly to the Dean and serving as the Dean's primary strategic liaison with the School's faculty, staff, students and the community at large, the Chief of Staff develops, implements and oversees complex internal and external projects within the purview of the Dean's portfolio to ensure effective administration, clear communications, and smooth daily office operations. This role anticipates and identifies issues for discussion at key high-level meetings, works closely with the Dean of the School, an executive office of three associate deans, and with senior leadership team members in the development and implementation of high-level projects.

This is an excluded position.

In addition to the CUNY Title Overview, the Chief of Staff will:

  • Serve as chief of staff, working closely with the dean, associate deans, and senior staff, with responsibility for monitoring and implementing divisional projects and priorities
  • Represent the dean on various committees and task forces; serve as a member of and administer the Dean’s Cabinet and Deans and Directors meetings
  • Provide leadership in implementing organizational policies and procedures in order to maximize resources
  • Participate in strategic planning and school-wide policy development and implementation
  • Oversee projects with college-wide impact, ensuring and evaluating their implementation and success
  • Manage and prepare high-level correspondence, internal and external communications on behalf of the dean and associate deans; resolve issues on behalf of the dean and associate deans. Monitor the dean’s outward-facing email account and resolve/respond on behalf of the dean.
  • Research and respond to complex questions related to various areas of the institution
  • Compose a variety of written and spoken materials on behalf of the dean and associate deans
  • Review and approve documents from all School areas as necessary
  • Manage the School’s Suggestion Box, working with Cabinet members and the dean to provide responses
  • Serve on high level committees
  • Serve as the School’s Lobbying Coordinator
  • Oversee special projects
  • Develop and oversee implementation of administrative processes for the School

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience required.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • PhD ( or other terminal degree) or a master’s degree
  • Substantial and progressively responsible experience providing high-level support within higher education; CUNY experience preferred
  • Understanding of the overall mission and vision of the school; ability to interpret policy
  • Demonstrated ability to problem-solve and negotiate in a complex, dynamic environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a record of success in fostering collaboration
  • Proven experience providing high level support to senior executive administration
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Diplomacy and demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively across faculty, staff, student, and external constituencies
  • Excellent organizational skills

 

 

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW

As a senior staff member serving as a confidential assistant in a Campus or University Executive's office, leads unit initiatives, participates in planning and setting priorities, and drives strategic initiatives to ensure their success.

  • Participates in planning and in setting policies with responsibility for preparing aspects of strategic and operational plans
  • Participates in developing and executing performance management systems to evaluate progress
  • Works with other Campus and University units to oversee complex, high-priority projects, with responsibility for outcomes
  • Represents the Executive in Campus or University-wide activities and may act in his/her place as needed
  • Independently carries out major responsibilities under the Executive's purview, such as monitoring and evaluating unit activities, financial planning and review, serving as chair of key committees, and communications with senior Campus or University management
  • May serve as Chief of Staff of a large Executive Office
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Salary commensurate with education and experience up to $133,676.
