Job Description

Installs, repairs, inspects, and maintains university gas appliances, meters, regulators, and distribution lines to ensure they are operating effectively. Inspects gas system processes, identifies areas for improvement within department, and makes necessary adjustments. Monitors and maintains records of university gas system needs and compiles maintenance reports with information related to university gas systems to be used for recommendations.

Facility Services employees are designated to be essential personnel and required to work during any closures.

  • Installs, services, and repairs stoves, refrigerators, and other gas appliances using hand tools and test equipment.
  • Connects appliance to feeder line.
  • Examines appliance to detect leaks or faulty pipe connections. Determines possible misuse of equipment or potential safety hazards.
  • Inspects all buildings (campus wide), meters, and regulators for proper usage and operation.
  • Maintains a scheduled preventative maintenance program ensuring gas appliances are checked according to schedule.
  • Complies with all job-specific safety requirements and procedures identified in job-specific hazard assessments (required training, PPE use, standard operating procedures, etc.).
  • Mandatory periodic On Call-An employee must remain available and be able to return to work in a reasonable period of time as determined by the supervisor.
  • Performs preventative maintenance work as required. Preventative maintenance could include but is not be limited to Inspecting joints, valves, pumps, boilers, heaters, sinks, commodes, tanks, valves and other plumbing system components to locate malfunctions and repairs or replaces when necessary.
  • Installs repairs and maintains water, gas, drainage, sewage and other plumbing systems.
  • Studies plans, drawings, specifications and work orders to determine work requirements and sequence of repairs and/or installations.
  • Removes snow and ice from designated areas such as roofs, sidewalks and entryways as required.
  • Will be required to work in confined spaces which include attics, furnaces rooms, crawl spaces & tunnels.
  • Working conditions could include inadequate lighting, restricted movement, dirty environment, air contamination, extreme temperatures, intense noise, and hazardous materials; moves heavy objects.
  • Technician may work outside in cold or hot weather or in buildings that are uncomfortable because the air conditioning equipment is broken. In addition, technicians might work in awkward or cramped positions, and sometimes will be required to work in high places. Hazards include electrical shock, burns, muscle strains, and other injuries from handling heavy equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Degree AND
  • 4 years of gas appliance repair or related experience; OR,
  • Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 4 years of heating experience.
  • Journeyman level position.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Working knowledge of furnace installation.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Knowledge of gas distribution systems and equipment including methods and materials used in maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of record keeping and inventory methods.
  • Computer skills.
  • Skill in the use of hand and power tools and equipment related to overall mechanical repair work.
  • Ability to effectively communicate.
  • The ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work in a group as well as individually.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting.

Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.

Salary

The salary range for this position is $36,018 - $45,023.

**The starting salary will be determined by the qualifications of the selected applicant balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.


FLSA Status

This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The incumbent is eligible for overtime pay or compensatory time according to University policy. Further, the employee must submit timesheets that accurately reflect all hours worked.

This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System; paid vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Additionally, new employees will begin participating in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date.
