Program Director, Environmental Law and Policy Program - Georgetown University Law Center

Georgetown's Environmental Law & Policy Program provides unmatched opportunities for students to pursue legal work surrounding human impact on the environment. We offer one of the most extensive range of courses available worldwide. Our curriculum covers core and advanced topics in domestic and international environmental law, as well as energy, natural resources, land use, historic preservation, and food law. The program melds rigorous pedagogy with practical, real-world opportunities available only in Washington, D.C.

The Program Director for Environmental Law and Policy coordinates academic and co-curricular programming for JD and LL.M. students enrolled in a program that includes Land Use, Energy Law, Natural Resource Law, Animal Law and International Environmental Law. Reporting directly to the program's Faculty Director, with an additional reporting line to the Assistant Dean for International and Graduate Programs, the Program Director duties that include but are not limited to:

Teaching & Scholarship
  • Teach the core course for Environmental & Energy Law LL.M. students
  • Conduct academic, policy and practice research and offer public engagement through scholarship, presentations, press etc. within area of expertise


Student Development; Academic and Career Advising
  • Recruit top students for JD and LL.M. programs with Office of Admissions
  • Provide informational sessions, correspond with prospective students, review applications for admissions and orient new students
  • Develop thorough knowledge of the JD and LL.M. courses and co-curricular activities in relevant subject areas
  • Provide specialized academic, wellness and career counseling for students
  • Host career events across employment sectors (public, private & government) and ensure students are aware of internships and job opportunities
  • Provide guidance to student environmental affinity groups and the Georgetown Environmental Law Review


Curricular Development
  • Together with faculty and administrative leadership, review and analyze curricular offerings in relevant subject areas through annual review
  • Continually update Environmental & Energy Law offerings by recommending new courses and adjunct faculty
  • Ensure curricular information is accurate and up to date in Curriculum Guide, Law Center webpages, program descriptions, the Student Handbook, admissions materials, etc.
  • Regularly conduct comparative research on all aspects of peer programs
  • Support and build community among adjunct faculty and provide them with pedagogical assistance to strengthen their performance in the classroom


Communications & Event Management
  • Maintain all internal and external websites, publications and materials
  • Substantively contribute to environmental law faculty listserv and serve as public-facing voice of the program
  • Support and advise student-run events with the Environmental Law Society and Georgetown Environmental Law Review
  • Coordinate and participate in academic conferences and symposia
  • Plan and host career-related events for students, alumni and employees
  • Plan and participate in Admissions Open House, New Student Orientation and Commencement activities


External & Alumni Engagement
  • Develop and maintain active network within relevant practice area
  • Recommend candidates for hiring, teaching, board membership, etc.
  • Provide alumni with program updates, advice, and career opportunities
  • Research and update alumni listserv of environmental and energy-related practitioners in conjunction with Alumni Affairs and Development


Qualifications
  • J.D. or LL.M. degree
  • At least 5 years of practice experience and expertise in Environmental Law
  • Experience teaching or mentoring law students
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Experience in project management and/or program administration
  • Skills necessary to develop a strong network of internal and external stakeholders
